Im sick of being sucked into sales you get there and the notebook you want has $200 off, no I want cost +5% if things get advertised so dramatically like there are massive savings to be had.

Anyone been to one?

I must agree here, it is almost at EB & Briscoes level of 'sales'..

It's the same everywhere... Harvey Norman and Noel Leeming catalogs are just glossy pictures of things they want you to buy for normal prices.

The worst offenders however are Bunnings and Mitre 10... Barely ever any price changes.

Pricespy is your friend. Never go with the glossy brochure, go with the price aggregation and comparison site.

PB usually have one or two good deals, often with limited numbers, and everything else is a small discount over their usual prices.

It isn't the same everywhere with all stores. Some will have everyday low pricing. But it seems to happen most in the more competitive areas. Where there is little competition, they rarely have discounts or sales. It is interesting though because 20 years ago, stores rarely had sales at all. But prices at normal pricing seemed lower too. These days when you don't buy things on sale, you feel like you are paying too much.

Bunnings does not do sales, the prices in the mailers are all standard pricing, not discounts.

Bunnings have also put little "Our policy" signs above the "lowest prices are just the beginning" signs outside, so I guess someone called them on their prices not being low ;)

PBs shelf prices have been nothing great for quite some time now. You really need to get your account onto one of the better pricelists to save money, and pricespy dont track those so makes it quite hard toknow if things are a deal or not, or if you should go try to bargain at some other retailer.

Also you cant use the prices when you are logged in to get other places to price match because they are a trade discount which is always excluded.

Exception is commercial customers - they do occasional 10% off Makita and similar, on top of their 5% off most things (except the sausages) for commercial card holders.

What do you expect with margins stretched so thin in almost every market. Almost no-one has the margins for geniune 30% off specials any more. Computers and electronics are especially tight and it seems to me to be a race to the bottom.

Every time PB Tech has a sale, it's usually the same price we get from our corporate account from them at work (as I understand it, we're on their lowest price level).

I wish I could give your post more than just one +1 as this is so true.  There is hardly any money to be made in selling hardware as margins are wafer thin and everyone expects huge discounts as well.

fair call but if you need to clear old stock ie 9 series gpu notebooks, cost + a small margin shifts it.

what i see is it still sits there and we wait while the rest of the world is up to date and at fair pricing.

When the store has a sale it's not cheap. When something is cheap the store has no sale.

I wouldn't call notebooks with a 9 series GPU old stock, While they're no longer top of the range anymore they're still a valid option for what most consumers want in a notebook which is why I'd imagine most retailers aren't rushing to lower their prices to a point they're making no money on the product just to move stock. Give it another 6-12 months as more new models come out with pascal based GPUs and then I imagine this will start happening.
