Hi all,

Anyone experienced with selling on TradeMe?

I recently sold something on TradeMe for the first time (not in trade), and chose 'Bank Transfer' and 'Credit Card' as payment options. However, it was only after the fact that I noticed that you need to enable and register for 'Pay Now' to accept credit card payments. I was surprised the option was even available to me if I'd not registered, and now according to the buyer, he had paid by credit card. I'm not sure what to do as I've not received the payment. I've sent an email to TradeMe who have yet to respond.

Any advice?

Here's what trademe says:

Sounds like it will take 3 days. Also sounds like you might need to list the item as shipped?

As I understand it, that's talking about 'Pay Now' - which I did not register for.

I concur with your assessment - if you're not registered I can't see how the payment could have been made.

Trade Me always email you to tell you that Pay Now has been used and authorising you to ship the items. If they have not done that then I would say someone is trying to get you to send something they have not paid for.

If you're not registered for Pay Now, there is no mechanism for them to have made payment by credit card.

The 'credit card' option exists as a payment option as may sellers are businesses and have merchant facilities of their own to accept credit card payment.

The buy is either confused or being dishonest. Perhaps they have made a bank transfer from their credit card account to your bank account? (If that's the case, all would be fine for you, but will be expensive for them!)

I agree with ajobbins.

If you chose "Credit card" then it is a credit card payment not handled by Trade Me:

from Trade Me help when listing an item :

Credit Card
(not on Trade Me)

Recommended for purchases from sellers who support it.

To receive credit card payments through Trade Me you have to chose "Pay Now". If you have Pay Now then Credit Card does not appear as an option when listing items.

If what you say you have done is correct then it doesn't sound like the trader has paid anything. They cannot pay into a credit card account if your payment instructions have not said how to make credit card payment. That is unless you list a website in your listing or profile which does have a credit card payment option.

Personally, I would say that I had made a mistake and give the trader the option to pay into my bank account. It is worthwhile being truthful, matter of fact and apologetic when it comes to errors. If they don't want to do this then there is not much that you can do without getting Trade Me help to enable Pay Now retrospectively. I don't think that will happen. But I have heard of sellers relisting with the correct payment option and making sure that the original buyer gets to win it.

Whatever you do you might just have to wear red feedback particularly if the buyer is trying to get the item for free.

If they really, really want to pay with a credit card and you're happy to do so - send them a PayPal invoice
