There are HEAPS of retailers who are still using dial up on their terminals when they already have BB and its much faster?

I think I am correct in saying some retailers got stung. A few years ago their were a lot of new EFTPOS machines that claimed to be 'broadband ready' it basically meant the machine could operate over your broadband line (to save on an extra dial up line) but the machine was still limited to dial up speeds so didn't actually make anything faster.

If the terminal allows TCP/IP connections there is no way it can be "throttled" as such to make it slower.

I am not up with the technicalities of it but I have seen it a few times now. I have only ever seen it with one type of machine, can't remember the brand right now but I can find out as the dairy down the road also has one.

They got this machine installed which claimed to run over broadband but they had seen no speed increase in swipe or chip transactions. I said I would see if I could help, the machine was running over the Broadband line (a decent ADSL2+ line) but doing timed tests resulted in 1-3% increase in speed over the dial up line. Called up their EFTPOS supplier and was told the machine works over broadband but doesn't get broadband speeds. No idea why or how? (possibly it is actually restricted in the software to encourage an upgrade?)

Whenever I have seen the machine around I always ask if it is running over broadband and the answer is usually yes, the speed always seems as slow as an old dial up machine though.

I know that isn't actually any helpful information their, I will find out the brand and model number of the machine tomorrow and post back.

Transactions speeds aren't really much faster over broadband than they are over dialup. It's still a TCP data transfer and the volume of data transferred isn't significant so there aren't any massive speed benefits of a 15Mbps broadband connection vs a V.92 dialup modem.

Where broadband is faster is that the dialup session isn't required which saves quite a few seconds. EMV transactions seem slower than mag stripe over dialup because the terminal can't do a lot until the dialup session is connected, whereas with mag stripe a lot of processing is already being done in the terminal before the dialup session is established.

I'm yet to find one retailer where the chip card is as fast to process as the old swipe card system. It always takes an age to come up asking for the PIN.

And you won't ever find one that is as fast, purely because of the amount of processing that is required between the terminal, pinpad, card and the EFTPOS network. There is no way to perform these additional checks when there are lots of things that take time, such as the card being powered up, that don't have to be done in the MSR world.

Use a good modern terminal like the newer Ingenico's (a few big retailers have deployed IPP320's now) and the time difference is so small though that it's barely noticeable. I'd go as far as saying unless you had a stop watch you wouldn't even be able to spot the difference.

It's just unfortunate NZ is behind the times with NFC, Aussie is basically the global leader right now, but I suspect we're only going to see modest growth until 2014 when every retailer has to have an NFC terminal. Because NFC had only been in the marketplace for 6 months before last June's cull of old terminals many retailers who should have gone straight to NFC capable terminals had to opt for non EMV terminals because there wasn't a good range of NFC capable terminals in the marketplace.

The other issue is that Eftpos New Zealand charge an extra $10 per month per machine to have an eftpos terminal connected via IP, no idea why as it is cheaper for both the client and ENZ to run it over IP.
This is part of the issue as retailers don't see the benefit of running over ip so don't.

I know that TWL Silvia Park run 20 terminals over a single dial up connection that stays online all day everyday - waste of resource in my opinion.

It was a forced decision for us. Cafe has no phone line, only naked DSL so we had to go broadband.

The arguments about ever improving technology make it madness to buy eftpos hardware. We lease ours, meaning any changes and we get the new hardware immediately.

Also, no extra charges on Paymark for eftpos over IP.

sbiddle: I visit a retailer quite frequently that doesn't even use the chip card reader. My chip card only needs to be swiped and works first time. How their terminal possibly managed to stay connected to the network after the cull of old terminals last year amazes me.

Ditto our local Chinese takeaway. An old as terminal that they still swipe my chip card with.

My new ASB chip Visa has the same problem in some places. Most places it's insert chip and it works fine, some places it's insert, swipe, insert swipe, and it's usually the places with older or poor quality looking readers that have the problem.

It is slower, but some places are much faster than others, usually the places with the newest terminals or the large places like Countdown.

It's incredible how slow those chip transactions are... Compared to swiping the card it takes forever for it to ask for PIN, then another eternal life to actually process the transaction.

I've found most (but not all) systems to be almost the same speed now. Certainly about a year ago the chip cards would often take ~10 seconds to process versus the ~2-3 seconds that the swipe method took. There are still the odd exception that takes significantly longer though.

I even managed to find a shuttle operator who still used a zip-zap machine rather than a wireless EFTPOS terminal, caused me some confusion when the charge appeared about a month later from a wierd sounding company.

Went to a Sushi store today, same thing. Inserted my card, the machine told them to swipe, so they did and then it told them to insert and it instantly asked for my account, pressed credit and it took like 5-7 seconds before it would ask for my pin, then another 5 seconds to process. They had one of those Vodafone modems sitting right next to the machine so I assume it was running over broadband.

the massive delay between account and pin has lead to me missentering so many times. Add to that the general crapness with laggy pinpads etc not getting repeating digits etc and often I am trying to enter a 1 or 2 digit pin despite pressing the buttons.

The worst one I've ever come across today, Wilson parking down from Subway off Symonds Street in Auckland Central. Insert your card, and you cant see the screen because its pretty much knee height. So you have to squat down to see whats happening, see it say processing for about 30 seconds, then it asks for your account, processes for about 10 seconds, then enter the pin and it processes for another 15 or so seconds before displaying "REMOVE CARD NOW!". Machine got attitude. Felt like a total dork squatting down just to operate this thing. ><
