joker97: if you want to travel overseas you need another card

On what basis?

I travel internationally typically four weeks a month and live off an American Express card. My AmEx vs. non-AmEx spending (cash, visa/mastercard) is easily $20:$1.

haha sorry that was what my dad told me a decade ago - he had trouble in many countries finding amex ... perhaps things are different today? in melbourne the amex surcharge is double the visa surcharge - if you could even get credit at all - many places only took cash :(

ok i don't travel first class and could be wrong about amex ...

I was in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago... there was only one place that I recall offhand that did not take AmEx but did take VI/MC. A couple of places that were cash (or eftpos) only, however.

I just cancelled my platinum amex a week ago after 15 years or so of carrying one. their points were great and racked up faster, but because you couldn't use the amex everywhere, you ended up with less points than if you just had a visa/mastercard.

I considered westpacs credit cards which give you both the amex and mastercard for one account, but their rate of earning points versus spending points was one of the worst and I would have been better off with just the amex.

there are tons of places you cant use amex. you basically have to carry cash, or another credit card alongside it.

To be honest, I'd say about 80% of my purchases are actually online that I know will take AMEX which is great - I probably could rack up a couple return trips in a year to OZ, hence my question is more specific to NZ merchants and what people's experience are with AMEX in their more day to day transactions.

Also, has anyone used the concierge service and would like to share their experiences?

dont bother with amex...

it is a useless card. you are better off with visa or mastercard.

Explain? I have all three and Amex is by far the best.
