Debit "VISA" cards not being accepted?

insane: I gave up trying to use my ASB debit card online for the same reason, doesn't work on anything, not even Vodafone.

And yes I did make sure the billing address the card is registered to is correct :)

Billing address is irrelevant. New Zealand cards don't support AVS - the only detail which can be validated is the country (and even then I suspect merchants only do that with a blind BIN check).

So what you're saying is that you DO have a problem then, because the whole point of this thread is that for some reason debit cards are constantly being rejected when used as a credit transaction.

I have a Westpac Visa Debit (it's actually the only card that I have) and have never had it declined. I'm buying stuff all the time (mainly NZ, US and UK) and it seems to work just like a normal Visa.

When buying online I use it as a credit card. At a physical shop I use the "cheque" (EFTPOS) option.

I assumed this was the way Visa debit worked, so I don't have a problem with it.

The thread was about online transactions not working, which is very different to being at a site and making a payment.

But you're not supposed to use/press "credit" on the eftpos machine with Visa debit, you're supposed to use either "cheque" or "Savings".?

So if I put any address in the billing field of my debit card it would still process?

God talk about over reaction, because you are having a problem then it must be an "evil plan to get fee's"

Your details logged with your bank for your debit card might not be correct, over the last few months banks/payment gateways are starting to check more details etc for NZ cards.

Make sure all your details are what shows on your card/statement i.e. address is 100% correct, name on card etc.

If everything is fine, talk to your bank about it with websites/time etc, they will be able to tell you why it was rejected.

Incorrect. "Credit" is what you pick to use it as a debit card. Otherwise, you're simply using it across the EFTPOS network as a regular EFTPOS card. Merchants prefer this of course because it costs them less (assuming they are, as most are, on blended commission rate rather than interchange+).

mrtoken: Make sure all your details are what shows on your card/statement i.e. address is 100% correct, name on card etc.

If everything is fine, talk to your bank about it with websites/time etc, they will be able to tell you why it was rejected.

As mentioned, AVS is only really supported on US-issued cards. The address is not able to be verified directly, so it won't be that.

Also, the merchant cannot tell you why it was declined. We (merchants) get a code which is issuer specific as to why the transaction failed. The only one that we can identify on sight is Code 10. Other than that, we can tell you what the code was but only your bank can tell you what it means.

I have both Visa (NZ) and Mastercard (AU) debit cards and they both work fine for all manner of online transactions.

The debit cards actually came into existence because in the US, where they don't have an EFTPOS network like we do here, the Visa and Mastercard network, which was already widely used, have been used instead. I have certainly not heard of the US starting to block them. They have been around in the US for many years longer than we have had them in this part of the world.

I've had multiple debit cards since they first came out with Westpac, BNZ and ASB and not one of them has been usable by selecting credit at EFTPOS or ATM. They've always used Cheque.

I have always been under the impression that it is essentially an EFTPOS card with a Visa number on it which is used for manual CC and online transactions and as a normal card over EFTPOS.

ASB seems to agree with me

Visa Debit lets you shop anywhere you usually would with EFTPOS, PLUS anywhere Visa is accepted. And because it links directly to a nominated ASB account, you use your own money to buy things in New Zealand, online, over the phone or even overseas.

Since you can use a Visa Debit Card to shop everywhere you’d usually need a credit card, you can take advantage of a world of shopping opportunities without the need to apply for credit.

You’ll need to nominate the accounts that you would like to access with your Visa Debit Card.

So does ANZ

An ANZ Visa Debit card is like an EFTPOS card, only better as you can use it anywhere Visa is accepted (online, over the phone, overseas and in stores) using money from your everyday or savings account.

Debitplus Visa works like an Eftpos card, using money from your transaction account. But you can also use it online and over the phone, in fact, anywhere a credit card can go. Handy, right?

Your Debitplus Visa card is simply linked to one of your eligible Westpac transaction accounts*. So when you use your Debitplus Visa, you’re using the money in that account (including any prearranged overdraft funds available).

A Visa Debit (or MasterCard Debit) card is just a credit card where instead of having a credit balance it simply uses your transactional account balance instead. You use it as a Debit card rather than EFTPOS card by hitting Credit. Period. If you use it any other way, you're just using the linked accounts function to use it as an EFTPOS card instead. Which is fine by the way - I can't see any reason you'd want to use the debit function anyway when you're physically present at a store.

One thing to note though, and this just occurred to me, is that places like Domino's actually process the Credit Card transactions by manually entering the card details into a Paymark/EFTPOS terminal (this is why they always give you an EFTPOS receipt to sign). If their EFTPOS is configured to reject debit cards (a debit card can be distinguished from a prepaid or credit card, so this is possible - if they're using blended rate then they would want you to use EFTPOS instead of Credit with one of these cards, though with interchange+ it's not a huge deal) then you would not be able to use it even online because the manual keying into the terminal would fail.

That's really annoying if this is becoming a common thing, can anyone confirm their own experiences?

I struck it tonight trying to do a top-up of a Telecom Pre-pay phone. It rejected my VISA debit, but accepted my MasterCard.

Vodafone still let me use my VISA debit.

As last time I tried it, it worked with my Visa Debit. In fact the only place I have ever had an issue with it was paying for a hotel as I was sick of carrying around my traditional visa now just carry a Visa Debit with a small amount of money on the account linked to it so the fraud risk is very low.

If you're still having a problem via the above link I will ask around what the story is.

Yeah hotels and rental car agencies often refuse them because a) they get a lot of complaints as any 'holds' taken on the card come off the available balance of the linked account (which leaves some people high and dry), and b) because if something goes wrong (Eg, you trash the hotel room), there is less of a chance they will get any more money off the card.

They block this by company policy, rather than the machine decline the card. If they allow it to go through the machine it will work, but they will usually refuse the card when they see the 'debit' logo.

Dominos used to do a auth for the amount, and then a charge for it later on, this lead to people with debit cards having problems with their money becoming unavailable till the auth was released.

Last time I used my credit card with dominos it did it directly as a charge, no authorization was done, my available only dropped by the amount of the charge.

My BNZ debit visa card works perfectly fine, it is my only card. As a teenager that is not eligible for a credit card my Debit VISA is all that I have. I really see no need to get a proper card when I turn 18
