what is the point of this thread?

No way I'm posting my income on a public forum and I can't see any particular reason why the OP would ask the question.

I don't disclose my income (or bank balance) in public forums or otherwise. All I'm willing to say is that it's enough to cover all the things I need (in point of fact I live pretty frugally) including the mortgage, a few of the things I don't need but want (eg my gadget addiction!), with enough left over to put something in the jam jar for a rainy day and retirement.

Letting people find out what I earn is counter-productive and I don't. Apart from the hit up for loans aspect, most of the assorted relatives would probably bitch and moan that I was overpaid - particularly the ones who heaped scorn on me for "not wanting to work" when they left school and went straight into low-paid jobs while I went to Uni. But they forget that I have to account for lost wages for the the 5.5 years without full-time income and loans for fees etc before figuring whether I'm ahead.

I'm not a big drinker, don't smoke, and I have always worked on the basis that if I can't pay cash for something then I can't afford it. Only exceptions made were uni fees (which I mostly covered by working long-ish hours after classes and weekends to keep borrowing down) and the house - both of which I regard as investments.

When friends or family ask me what I earn, my response is simply "enough".

Hi, I respect your privacy there, all I was trying to figure out is 'how much' income would be a "good", "enough" lifestyle in the future, plus stuff (after all the expenses have been paid) that I/We want e.g gadgets etc..

Someone posted a income stats on technology jobs, and that was very helpful. Thank you.

Since only about two people on GZ know who I am in real life, I don't mind sharing that I make around $72k/year (software developer).

I work in retail middle management specialising in fires, heat pumps, ventilation and hot water.
Worked there 4-5 years and am on around 39K after tax but I have no student debt and own a house, a car, a nice motorcycle and plenty of computer equipment at 26 so I can't complain :)

Different people in different cities require different incomes... In other words, one size doesn't fit all. If you could give some more context as to where in NZ you are, what level of lifestyle you want and how rich your tastes are it would be more helpful on giving some advise.

Like others mentioned - Not enough as I know how much I am worth given the contributions to the organisation. Then again, I eat out most nights and pretty much afford to buy anything within reason.

If it is a job you love doing you'd work for free or next to nothing. Second best would be getting paid a fair compensation rate for skills offered.

I suspect you're going to get fairly skewed results from this thread. As someone else already mentioned, I think with age comes a desire for a bit more privacy around these sort of things. I also think perhaps people are quick to share this sort of thing if they think what they're earning is similar or less than others, and won't cause any sort of friction or similar in group they're sharing with, but if they think it might they're not going to share and I suspect those who are earning significantly more will be reluctant to share that information. The whole "one size doesn't fit all" is also a good point.
