My mums going through this at the moment. Purchased an iPhone case off a seller, has already paid using pay now but hasnt heard a thing about it since. She's more annoyed with how rude the seller is with not replying than the amount shes lost.

Trademe actually have a fairly active fraud division, when selling a car recently they emailed me to warn that a person of interest to them had viewed my classified and would likely make contact and begin their scam as explained in the email.

Sure they were a day late as the scammer had already contacted me the day before with a ridiculous proposal, but still comforting to know they do have some checks in place.

There is a debt collecting 101 thread over on gpforums where someone gets a scammer to loose his job, be declared bankrupt, and end up in jail over a few $$. Very interesting read on how to use the justice system to reclaim lost money, scary in fact!

I would consider you to be very lucky. I reported it to trademe and all they did was try ringing him (of course he wouldn't answer). They then told me how I could apply to get his address through the courts. As I said before when I spoke to the police they were unhelpful and couldn't give a sh*t.

I didn't think it was worth me taking him to the disputes tribunal because he was on the move all the time, different addresses. Also the police were looking for him anyway.

Have seen that gp forum post before, I don't think it is scary, I think it is awesome!

qwerty7: I get your point about profanity but you would think if the police were looking for him anyway and then they found him that they could at least mention my stolen money. They were in contact with him knew he stole my money and did not do a thing.

It definitely was not a spam filter issue.

It's not stolen you passed it over to the trader

I never got my money back, and probably never will. I made a complaint at the front desk of the police station. They took a statement and a month later for a call from taranaki police. I included the guys bank details, phone number etc.

Was he charged solely because of your complaint or were there other factors, what $ value are we talking. Surely that shows the inconsistencies of the police. I asked if there was any formal complaint process I should use and they said no. They took down my number and said thety would call me if they find the guy (as they were looking for him for other reasons). They did take down my number, they did find him but I didn't hear sh*t.

This makes me more unsatisfied with the response of the police than I was before.

Than exercise you're right. Go back to the police station and ask to speak to a senior officer (preferably a Senior Sargent if they are available). Outline you're complaint and why you are unhappy with the response and let the system work, it will. If anyone suggests the IPCA, they would not take a complaint from you until you had followed the Police Complaints procedure.

Alternatively you could try calling the Police. Your area is likely covered by the Crime Reporting Line which takes the initial report than sends it to a station to be assigned. The level of service you would receive via the Crime Reporting Line should be excellent (they are very strict on their Quality of Service) and would be uniform, rather than what you may receive via the station.
