eXDee:  but imagine if someone created an "address lookup" tool online using that data. There would be mass outrage.

It already exists, its called a habitation index,

basically it lists every street in the electorate and lists all the registered voters by house,

They are not as commonly available as the regular roll, but each registrar of electorates has them and they are public documents also

ubergeeknz: I did not realise anyone can go and browse the electoral roll... I suppose it's necessary to have that transparency but it seems like kind of a privacy issue

I guess it is, but if you're 18+ you're required to be on it. It lists your FULL name by the way.

And if you think that's scary, there's also something called the "Habitation Index" which is usually sitting along side the Electoral rolls. This lists every street in the electorate, and indexes each house number in the street, and all of the voters full names at that address. Perfect for stalking a pretty chick you see going into her property! Surprised

That seems really unnecessary :/  I can't think of any good reason to make that publicly available.  We are way OT now though :P

Some laws in NZ haven't caught up with others. The electrol roll and privacy is definitely a concern.

"Associate Professor Andrew Geddis, from the University of Otago's politics department, said it was better people were on the unpublished roll as opposed to not voting at all.

Geddis said the reason the rest of us have to go on a published roll is to show there is no rorting.

"The underlying principle of the published roll is transparency. The original reason electoral rolls were developed was both because they allow people to vote but also trying to get a handle on where people lived."

Geddis said going back in time the roll was almost a de facto register of where people lived.

"But I really doubt they play that role in the modern administrative state.

"The short answer as to why we have to go on the open roll is that we have always had to and no-one can come up with a good reason to change it, I guess.""

So anyone can opt out of being in the published roll?  Why is this not told to you when you enrol!?

Here we go!  edit: the answer is no, only if you are in particular circumstances...
