When I have been to countdown in highbury and they have had huge queues at the checkouts (I dont self checkout after the last hassle I got there from security staff) I have on at least 3 occasions just walked away from a trolly of 15-20 things because it had been 10 mins, about 8-9 people queued at the one or 2 open checkouts and the staff milling around the checkout supervisor area not getting off their arse and opening another one.

If they have to put it all back it will hopefully make them think.

I hope you don't do this with chilled or frozen products! The amount of waste that's caused by people dumping chilled/frozen products in supermarkets is horrifying. In my younger days when I was based in different supermarkets I spent a lot of time dealing with this wastage which would often amount to hundreds per day at the larger markets.

Often there may be a tub of icecream or something in there, perhaps the loss thru abandoned sales would go some way towards paying some competent staff? I certainly dont get any meat at countdown since its all so aweful.

New World dont seem to have a problem having enough checkouts open with people ready, and they dont have a grunt at the self checkout accusing people of not scanning things.

Sorry but I find that to be a terrible reason to waste perfectly good food, which we all end paying for in higher prices (shrinkage and waste are built into the price and are a factor in price increases).

I find having my time wasted by a retailer cocking up their staffing levels constantly to be a bigger waste than a few dollars worth of food spoiled.

If they are not using abandoned trolleys as a metric for their checkout performance then they are incompetent morons.

I spent 30 years of my life in the supermarket industry. I'd prefer to walk out, drive to another store and start my shopping from scratch than queue in a store that clearly doesn't want my business.

Countdown stores are also terrible when it comes to replacing physical checkouts with the kiosks. I put a $150 order through one a few months ago that required the intervention of staff on 8 occasions. It was still quicker than the queue for the single checkout that was open.

Certainly not, but I was raised better than to protest by deliberately causing loss of income by waste of leaving perishable items to go to waste.

The intelligent way to solve both your issues, would be to find a shelf stacker or other employee, hand them your basket. Tell them you are leaving because you aren't prepared to wait because there aren't enough staff
manning the tills but there are perishable items in your basket you thought they might want to restack immediately. Your way achieves nothing as it's likely the person who finds it, won't know you left in a huff or why, and secondly,
it's a waste of food, and actually could be considered theft.

Your "method" of protest is braindead.

Oh it's not just the Dunedin Countdowns that are understaffed then. If I was more organised id do the online shopping thing and just pick it up.

I've had it once I went to a Countdown to find 4 staff hanging around talking, 2 lanes open and quite a few customers. I've personally done the same and never returned. New World is where I go, wait times are normally less than 1min and the service is far better. Personally, I don't mind paying extra for service, I normally avoid Briscoes because their product is of warehouse quality most of the time and it's actually not too cheap even when they're having a "sale" on, sure you can sometimes get cheap sheets but these normally don't last.

Compare to my last visit to Tescos (in Malacca, not the UK!) in which the store manager opened a till and personally served me because they were busy and I was in a hurry.

I'm afraid there are great improvements yet to be made in customer service here in NZ.

Sadly most of the staff are braindead in my experience too, so I doubt that would make a lot of difference!

I think part of the problem stems from a complete lack of wish to actually serve those who are shopping - by which I mean 'give service to' not 'take money from'. Added to that is a woeful lack of staff training and the lack of a proper national leadership for what are often branded owner/operators.

Add to that the complete lack of worthwhile competition and this is what you get. In places like the US, if you delivered service like that you'd be bust pretty fast. Here, "meh, where else you gonna go mate?"

some pretty self centered people in here, leaving a trolley without saying anything achieves nothing more than satisfying an ego. If you have a problem with the service say something or don't shop there.

Just remember its the staff members who have to put the stock back not the managers so your little protests have achieved what exactly, all you have done is waste your own time.
