I managed to get one VPS up and running last night. Your instructions were very easy to follow, though I found I had to install some more dependencies (libdb4.8 related), it may have already been there but primecoin couldn't find it and I'm not a *nix guy so get lost pretty quickly.

What I am good at is Google, and I found this post that gives a less detailed explanation of how to do the build, but it did mention adding an extra repository and installing additional packages. Link - http://www.peercointalk.org/index.php?topic=798.0

Thank you for your guide gundar, I'll make sure some XPM makes it your way after I get some payouts.

For the record, what Ubuntu version are you using and what is the VPS provider?

You can check your revision at the console / terminal with this:

lsb_release -a

And you can check your bitness with this:

uname -a

If I was to leave this running on my otherwise mostly idle i5-quad "server" without using a cloud provider - would the potential income be likely to equal/exceed the additional cost to my power bill?

If I'm reading it right, 1 BitCoin is currently trading at USD$834 - Several times what it was when I last looked into it about a year back. :)

1 PrimeCoin looks to be around USD$3.80ish?

Same as mine at the same provider, either you stumbled upon a slightly different image or there was a typo somewhere.

I'll check my sidea again to be sure, but I'm confident it's right. At least, it is working on your side and you learnt something.

I use a c2d desktop (two cores). most of my work is in Google, these days and I leave it on all the time now. It plays nice with other applications and although it uses up all the processor power it can find, it shares well.

The currency fluctuates wildly all the time. I'd say you should look at the last two weeks to get a picture of what's going on - last week it was almost US$7, this week it's US$4.2 BTC-e takes 0.2% to convert to Bitcoins, but like all actual banks, they have their own wildly fluctuating exchange rate, I usually convert if the XPM/BTC is 0.004 or less (unless I want to buy something in BTC badly) an dI am saving up to buy a hardware device.

Currently the number of miners are increasing and the yields will start to go to the hungrier miners until, inevitably, hardware miners appear. Getting in early allows you to trade early and ensure you get a foothold before everybody is aboard - IMHO.

I had a terrible mining day today, if you're one of the many tracking my wallet ;-)

I worked late last night, under fatigue, over breakfast, I setup my physical server and inadvertently left a typo in primecoin.conf.

Tomorrow will be better and on the weekend, there will be enough data for me to post an update on the wide variety of operating systems and hardware I currently have running. This will hopefully help you decide where is best to put your money.

Also, all this fun isn't free, please use the links in the post if you do buy VPSs and please consider sending a few XPM my way when you are rich and famous (or use my wallet ID for a few hours on your VPS fleet ;-)

How would I scrap what I have done and start again?

I am very crap with linux and think I have stuffed up... I am only getting 0.0109 xpm/h with an 8 core vps

Easiest way is to post your primecoin.conf file so that somebody can have a look. You can remove your wallet ID and replace it with xxxxxx 's since we know your wallet works.

This is solo mining, or is it pooled? I don't remember reading anything in guide about pools. Perhaps you'd get more consistent results by joining a pool?

I got my 8 core physical server running, I expect it will be slightly faster than a VPS of similar spec. It's only been running a few minutes, so my wallet log won;t show awesome results for a while.

Here is it's config file (I have changed/masked nothing - first line is instruction to display it):

Here is my processor types (install cpuid first, then run it to look for the 'friendly' name that is in string format):

sudo apt-get install cpuid
cpuid | grep string

Processor name string: AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 3280

It's a hosted physical box, apparenlty, I have tow of those quad cores in there, so I imagine in a VPS environment, you will have a similar sort of system, check that you have a simialr amount of PPS and I would allow up to 25% becasue you will be sharing your processors.

Finally, this is what htop output looks like:

As you can see, the processors are being worked to 100% and I have 8 primecoin threads.

Otherwise, I can't see anything wrong with your config file, can you tell me how my output above compares to yours?

might not be relevant but I had a similar problem to start with. Turned out to be my anti virus gateway trying to scan the traffic that was causing it. Once I created a rule to let it through it got much better.
