i think one of the more interesting arguments for digital currency vs. current payment systems was when wikileaks started taking donations. they accepted donations via paypal, visa, and mastercard

then all three of these companies blocked wikileaks from accepting any more payments through their channels, and froze any donations in transit

is wikileaks, and their agenda, right? or is it wrong? answer: it doesnt matter, because the CEOs and upper management of paypal, visa, and mastercard already made that decision on your behalf

to me this illustrates why a payment system like bitcoin, with no intermediary like a bank or credit card company deciding what is acceptable use of your money, is game changing

definitely try to buy in person or via bank transfer, before using an exchange. its easier, cheaper, faster, and you may be able to negotiate a better rate. make the exchange your backup option. obviously a little due diligence is required, have a browse through the last 4 or 5 pages of the thread and you should see a few testimonials for successful trades. if you feel like you need a bit more security, add the seller as a friend and make the exchange through facebook, also make the transfer in multiple parts instead of one lump transaction.
