The AirNZ, fastest is the GlobalPlus Amex Gold at $66 per 1APD. Others are generally $75 or $90. Yep but with AirNZ you can pay $199 and get to Sydney (return) or $725 to Tokyo (return) on grabaseat. There are good deals occasionally.
What's the going rate for Hotpoints to earn a point? I know that this card is triple points. How much points do you generally need it for Hotpoint goods or airfares?
Mum's got the Plat Cashback card. If you spend $5k you get 0.5% back, if you spend $10k you get 1%. With the Plat card you earn cashback on every dollar, I think the Gold might exclude the first few thousand (as no cashback).
PS with a overseas airline programme. if you do normal fare travelling ie not grabaseat and it's further than AU. A single return to Hawaii gets you silver or two returns (or a single to Europe) gets you Gold Star Alliance that you can access AirNZ lounges and other airlines.
Edit - a bit of hunting. This card offers 3x Hotpoints per $1 spent. I ignored the goods cos they can diff between sale periods, and diff stores and e-stores. But for a $25 Glengarry voucher = requires 4500 Hotpoints. Divide by 3 = needs $1500 spent to get that $25 voucher. Which means to get $1 voucher needs $60 spent. Kiwisaver provides $20 credit for 3600 hotpoints divide by 3 = $1200 spent. Each dollar earnt requires $60 spent. So the same.
So slightly better than the GP Amex Gold. But for the old double hotpoints card it's not as quick.
You can get rewards for normal things and vouchers for travel etc .. but if one wants that $99 fare to Sydney or $998 to LA that has to come from your wallet elsewhere.
With ASB Platinum I get 1% back : a $1500 purchase gets me $15. If there are others that are significantly better (other than Amex, which isn't accepted everywhere or there's larger surcharges) I'd consider switching.

Due to the annual cost, I don't think this new premium card is going to replace Titanium cards.
Westpac however is replacing their gold visa cards with platinum marstercards though.

seems like a good deal to me.
I fly international with whoever has the best deal at the time, which means accruing enough points to get good status (silver is a waste of time) on any given system is quite hard. So this CC will allow me to use lounges regardless who I fly with, pretty sweet. Also, with my wife and I sharing the account, we will BOTH get to use the lounges, even though she rarely flies and so never comes anywhere near status
the free car upgrade and gold hertz membership looks quite good too. Not sure on the hotel thing. room upgrades are nice, but not sure how many hotels fall under that list.
The car rental upgrade is just one occasion per year I think. The Gold for Hertz seems to be just priority checkin/counter service and express drop off etc .. a dedicated line to get to the call centre operators faster etc. Gauranteed of a car xx days before you wanna use blah blah.
The hotel upgrade that is for Starwood partner/network hotels ie - Sheraton, Westin, Alofe, Luxury Collection etc ... in otherwords good if you tend to go to international chain hotels and pay more for it than a domestic chain hotel.

This year alone I have traveled to the US 2 times. Clocking up enough for another good holiday with the family. Last time I checked I already had enough for return fares for 3 of us to Aus. Just need to clock up a few more.

But yeah if one has enough APD as a AirNZ card or combined to the AirNZ CC, you can use those for grabaseats.
Sure - international fares do earn APD and status points (SP). International grabaseats further than AU do not earn APD. The normal ones do thou. Not sure about grabaseats NZ local or to AU though .... You might earn APD if you get the seat only or seat + bag. But if you were to get those advertised on the morning perhaps not (?). When I went to Japan on a $700 fare return I don't recall I got APD, I did get some SP though. :)

I think you can actually. You buy the seat on your westpac CC as normal, then you can claim it back in hotpoints.

not quite right (I think). with this card you get 3 hotpoints per dollar spent, so to get $10 holiday credit you need 2000 points, which is a spend of $666, or a 1.5% earn rate (check my maths please, it's getting late in the afternoon) that's actually a better rate than the ANZ visa platinum http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints-partner-anz

plus with hotpoints there is a lot more stuff you can spend your points on vs airpoints dollars. I mostly use mine for bunnings vouchers.

But I am more into travel :D But I have pretty much getting domestic fares to AKL for my intl fare these days comapred to the 10yrs ago when it was based on mileage. No more long haul freebie for me, in 2004 I did receive a free trip to Japan thou. Given the option I take the no APD $700 fare to Japan and back then the $1800 fare.

fair enough. I generally don't consider the annual fee as I easily spend more than the minimum to waive it anyway (putting business expenses on personal credit card gets me mucho points :D )

Best way is always business travel huh ... My mum is visiting her mum in Canada. $2,400 return discount economy (non refundable fare) gives $90APD. Prem economy $200-400APD and Premier Business $600-900APD.
