Kyanar: Ah, the Kathmandu model. Many an Aussie retailer has had a whinge about it.
Aussie businesses are pretty ruthless I have found, and it is unusal for a NZ business to do well over there. Many businesses have expanded to Oz, and have had to retreat after not doing very well, The warehouse and Telecom come to mind. NZers treat aussie businesses well over here, we don't care so much on whether the business is NZ owned or not, more about the price we end up paying.
Dunnersfella: Dig deeper into who actually owns Kiwi businesses, and you'll often find many shareholders are from outside of NZ...
Ultimately, both NZ and overseas companies are staffed by locals... so it comes down to price, layout, location and of course, service.
Yes many NZ Companies listed on the companies register, are actually overseas owned, and many companies that appear to compete against one another are owned by the same parent.
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
KiwiNZ: Technically Harvey Normans are many companies, they are franchises with each store having four separate businesses, Computers, Appliances, Furnishings, Bedding.

No they're not. All Harvey Norman stores in New Zealand are company owned and operated. HN franchises only exist in Australia (see the Annual Reports).

Nope, they're franchises in both NZ and Australia.
I have no idea about Ireland / Slovenia etc, but it's a franchise setup over here.

Nope, they're franchised in Australia and company owned everywhere else in the world. Source: the company's annual reports.
In overseas markets our stores are company-operated. Our total retail segment primarily consists of company-operated stores in New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Slovenia and Croatia and the stores previously trading under the Clive Peeters and Rick Hart brand names in Australia prior to the restructure of the business.
