Retailers have done it to themselves.

Sales used to be meaningful and genuine bargains to be had, now most major retailers have sales every other weekend with perceived discounts rather than actual bargains, but, if they were to drop their prices permanently and used average margins all the time, what would bring people in the door?

Local retailers have really done it to themselves when they make it so hard to buy from them vs ebay and amazon for things that are ok with a longer wait too.

Why would I want to go to your store and talk to someone to find anything out about the product.

Pricespy is putting an end to the 'high price during the week, low on the weekend (just in time for another sale)' approach.
Instead, we'll see the rise of exclusive products, where you can't sit on-line and compare prices... because each and every store holds different models from each other.
Happy days?

Aussie businesses are pretty ruthless I have found, and it is unusal for a NZ business to do well over there. Many businesses have expanded to Oz, and have had to retreat after not doing very well, The warehouse and Telecom come to mind. NZers treat aussie businesses well over here, we don't care so much on whether the business is NZ owned or not, more about the price we end up paying.

Dig deeper into who actually owns Kiwi businesses, and you'll often find many shareholders are from outside of NZ...
Ultimately, both NZ and overseas companies are staffed by locals... so it comes down to price, layout, location and of course, service.

Yes many NZ Companies listed on the companies register, are actually overseas owned, and many companies that appear to compete against one another are owned by the same parent.

Smiths City / LV Martins / Powerstore = Smiths Group
Harvey Norman own a chunk of Briscoe's and I think, Rebel Sport.
The Warehouse own Noel Leeming / R&R Sport / Warehouse Stationery etc.
It goes on and on...

Rebel Sport is a wholly owned subsidiary of Briscoe Group, as is Living and Giving.  You're right though, Harvey Norman holds a 2.43% stake (listed in Briscoe's "top 20 holder list" in their last annual report) - a majority stake would be almost impossible for them to get though due to the 79% stake held by the "R A Duke Trust".

Alcohol is another not very competitive environment.  Liquorland is owned by Foodstuffs (Pak n' Save, New World), Liquor King is owned by Lion (the brewery), King Dick's is owned by the Portage and Waitakere Licensing Trusts.  Super Liquor is the exception, apparently being a co-operative (with 187 private shareholders, no-one with more than 2%).

Technically Harvey Normans are many companies, they are franchises with each store having four separate businesses, Computers, Appliances, Furnishings, Bedding.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

No they're not.  All Harvey Norman stores in New Zealand are company owned and operated.  HN franchises only exist in Australia (see the Annual Reports).

Nope, they're franchises in both NZ and Australia.
I have no idea about Ireland / Slovenia etc, but it's a franchise setup over here.

Nope, they're franchised in Australia and company owned everywhere else in the world.  Source: the company's annual reports.

You might have more luck convincing people if you actually quote a page number/actual quote like I'm about to, instead of linking blindly to a list a potential sources...

Because, like others I was sure HN was operated here under the Aussie model (mainly due to their politicking of "oh you've got kitchenware and computer stuff? You've got to go through BOTH checkouts" which, in Aussie, was due to the Aussie franchise arrangements, also in my case, the understanding was due to what someone apparently 'in the know' had told me, hmmm guess not)...

In overseas markets our stores are company-operated. Our total retail segment primarily consists of company-operated stores in New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Slovenia and Croatia and the stores previously trading under the Clive Peeters and Rick Hart brand names in Australia prior to the restructure of the business.

From the 2013 report page 12.

Well I've met franchise holders from NZ Harvey Norman stores as recently as last week... I wouldn't trust every link on the interweb.
