PhantomNVD: BUT strangely also has paywave functionality, and will happily charge out upto $80 without ANY authorisation, which I DON'T like, so I guess you just have to suck up whatever the banks feel like doing until eventually you get used to it, or they start only adding the features you ASK for?

What don't you like about it? As long as you comply with your card's T&Cs, you're not liable for unauthorised transactions anyway - as has always been the case.

I have an Amex and it does PIN everywhere as well. As I'm in Australia, I assume come tomorrow I won't even get the option to sign for transactions. I'll see when I get my breakfast I guess.

BUT the new CC i got with a chip in it refuses to be swiped (forced to use chip) and takes AT LEAST twice as long to go though (AND insists on holding the card till the final transaction goes through!)

Pay Wave cards can only be charged by being near a terminal when a merchant has *FIRST* initialised and authorised a transaction on their Pay Wave terminal. Just walking past a terminal will NOT charge your card as there is no transaction active to be charged to your card.

These 'horror stories' about Pay Wave cards being charged just by being near/walking past a terminal are just the usual bad sensationalist reporting, rumours, and urban myths in the making.

The AMEX PIN is a new thing - around 18 months old or so. I know, I have had an AMEX since 1990...

I ditched mine two years ago so they may have changed since then. While I had it I sent them numerous emails with always a fob off answer that you could use a pin in an ATM.. The other reason I ditched it was the lack of places I could use it. It was fine for traveling, restaurants and some online stuff but that was about it..

Cool. I'll give it a go with pin next time use it. Guess there's a lot of people that don't realise that pin works now.

I asked Prezzy Card people about this. THis is their replay

"Visa have mandated that from October 2015 in NZ all credit cards (excludes payWave, phone & internet transaction and Prezzy cards) transactions will need to be PIN (PIN@POS) instead of signature. This aims to strengthen payment security.

Australia may have already had this rolled out. From now however Visa will be encouraging cardholders to PIN and not sign.

Prezzy is exempt from this so you should not have any issues using this card anywhere."

Looks like it's coming but still a long way off.

I tried my AMEX with pin today at noel leemIngs, came up "Invalid Card Type" and I did press credit.

Did again, with no pin and pressing enter and it came up with the signature required, so looks like not all AMEX's do pin.

Was a BNZ one.

Perhaps contact the bank and ask? The only time I've seen invalid card type is if the merchant doesn't accept amex/credit cards. Our amex is issued my American Express itself, not through a bank so maybe that's dofferent in some way?

Thanks. My card is not a chip one. Expirely date about two years away, so will have to sign receipts for a couple more years.

my amex uses a pin and has no chip. not all amex cards are equal. wonder if some people aren't getting their cards programmed with a pin?

to get around it couldn't the retailer do a manual transaction the same that hotels often do, especially when providing CC details over the phone?
