I always make a point to return things that break no matter how little (just returned a $4 peg basket to the warehouse, for a second time, because they can't handle UV light for more than 3 months - it's the principle!).
Generally staff have no information on the original product, especially if it's no longer sold - just a (sometimes cryptic) description on the original receipt. If you go back to a fresh staff member (perhaps a different branch?) and don't mention the drill, there's a good chance you'll get the full refund (store credit) and keep the drill
