I always make a point to return things that break no matter how little (just returned a $4 peg basket to the warehouse, for a second time, because they can't handle UV light for more than 3 months - it's the principle!).

Generally staff have no information on the original product, especially if it's no longer sold - just a (sometimes cryptic) description on the original receipt. If you go back to a fresh staff member (perhaps a different branch?) and don't mention the drill, there's a good chance you'll get the full refund (store credit) and keep the drill

A friend in the repair business told me once that a common cause of problems in any brand was the battery connection. My old Makita drill with the battery up the handle often needs the contact springs tweaked. Do you have something that simple happening?
