I had one particular guy ask me for "some spare change" one time too many outside of the local movie theatre. I told him to flock off.

I have had teens ask for things such as bus money so they can get home. When I was that age, I wouldn't have ever been so brazen. There has been a definite change in NZ for the worse.

I'll never help someone begging for money, guess I'm just an ahole that way. I would, however, donate to a charity that provides help to homeless or the likes. You can't really walk anywhere in Wellington without seeing someone begging these days.

As above, if you give them money chances are it's just going straight onto alcohol, drugs or something not related to food. If you try give them something they actually need like food or water, they won't want it because they can't spend it.

I suspect that there is a strong correlation in the rise of the number of recreational drugs available and the rise of these goddamned beggars.

Bunch of them keep working between Kaiapoi, Rangiora and South City in CHC. Saying they had a fight with the partner and needed bus fare. When you offer to take them as gong that way, you get abuse and they walk off.

Known by the stores but can't tresspass from anything other than being in the shop itself and notifying the police of them being an annoyance to get moved on.

Lol ouch. I was in Nashville one morning, walked down the to the river waterfront. Opposite almost the stadium. A guy of indigenous descent asked me for food as he was poor, and that he didnt want money. Very cool I thought . The he asked for $2

You have to wonder why city councils don't make it illegal for homeless to 'loiter' in the streets, for health and safety reasons. There are shelters that they could be sent to, if they have nowhere to go. How about that unless you're actually doing something unreasonable, then nobody should be able to tell you where what to do or where to go - let alone "force" you.

Being a "weirdo" is subjective - and not enough reason. Neither is "loitering". If I want to stand somewhere just looking at life go by all day - then WTF business is it of anyone else - so long as I'm otherwise law abiding?

As far as beggars go - then IMO the often suggested solution of banning/shunning is sweeping a problem under the carpet - and/or just passing the problem on to someone else to sort out.

There was a begger on Courtenay Place a few years back who was asking for money to get down to Christchurch to work. I hardly had any money back then to support myself due to losing my job but I did have a tonne of Airpoints. Had a chat to him and he seemed genuine - was a builder who recently lost his job and Winz were not helping. I pulled out my phone and purchased a flight for him to get down to Christchurch using Airpoints and he was very greatful. Never saw him on the streets after that.

There are others you see all the time. One guy in the train station strikes me as being one of those holding a sign saying he needs $160 for bond - what I have noticed is this figure changes daily, one day it was $120 and the next it was $300 and he has been there for a good few weeks now.

I do help out many people with volunteer work - I donate Plasma / Platelets every 2 weeks without fail, I donate to many charities and also give money where I see it needed. I can't help out every begger on the street but if I see they're really genuine I would normally chuck them what is in my wallet but people abusing peoples generosity really gripe me.

If there was a star we could award, you would have it Michael.

My wife too.

Couple of weeks back we saw a guy begging outside countdown in paraparaumu. It was 9am cold and miserable.

So my wife bought him socks, food and fruit.

About 20 minutes later I get a call from countdown saying the guy had returned it as he didn't want it - wanting the cash in return - and did I want to swing by and collect it (I had the receipt so he wasn't able to get a refund). It was quite obvious he wasn't hungry or cold.

I work near McDonald's on Manners Street in Wellington so there are lots of beggars there (I won't refer to them as homeless). I do feel bad but I refuse to give them money or food.

Same. Ive sen lots of begging in the US. BUT, as I have paired before, a guy in SFO had a sign he was a Vet. He wanted only water, we gave him all ours as we were flying out that next morning. I wish I'd done more actually

I suspect that even if that's the case (possible - but unverified), the the correlation is something you should write down on on a long strip of paper, perforate it, roll it up, and make better use of it than argue that recreational drug (ab)use is the cause of begging.

It's becoming intergenerational in.recent years. Kids are growing up seeing their parents do stuff like this.

We need to return to a policy of good jobs with good conditions and good homes.

You don't have that, you get more of this. In fact, a lot worse too.

Direction. These days that seems not that important. If you just leave school at 15 and get a job thats direction. Too much I want it and I want it now IMHO (aka lazy and slack)

Yeah - too right. Blame them. Tell them little secrets like how my wife and I could save 20% deposit for our first home (probably worth well north of a million now) in under 12 months and paid it off in under 5 years - so they're useless if they can't do the same today.

People need hope. Remove it and you get what we're getting - at least for a significant proportion of people.

Yes its harder now, but where is the work hard and save hard and set goals? Its often the need to get the next iPhone. Or the new trend for jeans. I remember the Thursdays (payday) I used to walk the streets in town paying my HPs for the furnishings for the family home. We then bought that home. One income.

Now, its tougher. A couple, both work longer, one salary saves. Its more than doable.
