I raised the fees issue with BNZ store manager and they have said that they will waive the $50 currency conversion fee. They can’t avoid the $35 courier cost but are waiving my credit card fee for 6 months as a gesture.
I’m pleased they have come to the party on this occasion but i will still need to find something for any future cheques.

Banks call themselves storefronts now. It's a relatively recent thing probably inherited from their Australian parents. At least you don't have them trying to sell you merchandise yet like Bankwest Australia does.
