nzkiwiman:

I always let Amazon do the conversion for me. That way I know exactly what I am paying when the order ships in a few days, and I don't have to worry about extra fees by the bank
I also have some another form of proof of value in case customs jumps in and wants their cut

Customs calculate the value based on the foreign currency rate using their own published exchange rates which are NOT updated daily. They do not calculate this on what you've paid.

In a nutshell you're actually just overpaying for goods using the Amazon conversion because the converted rate incl bank fees will be cheaper than the Amazon dynamic currency conversion, and if you are very close to the import threshold for GST/Duty/IETF this will offer you no protection if the exchange rate customs use isn't in your favour.

I don't doubt your logic Steve and have never considered using Amazon or PayPal conversion.

But really the situation I had seemed to be a reasonable deal??

Your recent booking above looked to be amazing value with ANZ offering you above the mid market rate??

I just made a small purchase so may not be useful.

$6.08 NZD (for a 3.99 USD purchase) has been charged to my ANZ card according to GoMoney (unsure if this will fluctuate).

That is 0.67265625 after I remove 2.5%

XE currently says 0.6753

So actually (while the numbers are small) this represents 2.9% above the mid market conversion (inclusive of the 2.5% fee for foreign currency transaction).

I was so scared that the ANZ charge would be very high (based on their published exchange rates) that I went for what seemed reasonable at Amazon. And still it seems reasonable value.
