One of the tiniest silly things I love about the Crypto craze/crash/new stories is how newspapers ABSOLUTELY cannot stop themselves using a rendered image of a coin in every story so we know what a Bitcoin looks like...

I see you can buy actual Bitcoins on Aliexpress. They look quite cool and they're super cheap, some less than $1! https://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?catId=0&initiative_id=SB_20190206130329&SearchText=bitcoin

Thankyou! That is hilarious and I have just ordered some. I can't wait for a scammer to demand bitcoin now :-)

Let us know if they look the same as they do in the photos. If they do then I'll buy some and use them to impress people ("Here you go my good man, have a bitcoin for your trouble!")

Now that people can't ride the bubble we're back to exit scamming exchanges. Has nobody learned anything from MtGox? Banking regulations exist for a reason

You can buy real bitcoin coins too.

They work thus:

You create a bitcoin address and send one bitcoin to that address.

You mint a coin that looks a lot like the photos that you see on the web.

Then, you engrave the bitcoin address and the associated crypto key on the coin.

Now you have a coin that really is worth one bitcoin - so long as nobody else knows the key.

I have seen one of these coins and could verify that there was a real bitcoin at the address on the metal coin.

The problem being

a) Yes that's cool *

b) Someone only has to have access to the physical coin for a moment and then can access the funds without keeping the coin.

Cheers - N

* Sorry, I mean stupid... not cool.

There is an update on this one.

Investigators have gained access to the locked laptop and have examined the alleged cold storage facility used by the exchange.

It is empty.

The coins went out months ago.

They are attempting to find out where they went.

I like this comment someone else made[0]:

For some reason this sounds like the plot of a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

CEO of Crypto Company...

1) Takes time off to build orphanage in region noted for fake deaths.

2) Subsequently dies unexpectedly.

3) Is immediately cremated.

4) Wife waits a month before saying "oh by the way he is dead"

5) Wife claims all keys on encrypted laptop

6) World watches as wallets mysteriously empty

7) Experts crack laptop

8) All wallets turn up in fact empty

9) $140 million disappears into the ether

Plot twist: investigators finally opened his laptop and the cryptowallet is empty. Been empty for months.

My guess? Guy faked his death and is now living in Europe with a bought passport.

Seriously, these exchanges seems to be a hive of scum and villainy.

[Update: oh, this is on page two, missed it but yes, my comment above remains]
