For the record, I taught my MIL who is I would guess, 1/50th as technically familar/competent as you, and every bit and stubborn and reluctant (I'd suspect considerably more) as you have admitted you are, to use internet banking. It took 2 x 30 minute sessions and her to use it every day for a week (She just logged in and transferred $5 from one account to another for a week) and now she does it with confidence (relative to her personality).
One major issue I suspect you will have, is that Kiwibank requires a 4 digit code to be sent to you via text for transfers and if you don't have a mobile, that is going to be a problem. They have better 2FA coming, but it's probably a few months away.
I believe you can opt out of it for amounts smaller than an agreed amount, but for large sums, they require it for security reasons.

Your case was probably unique in that none of the predetermined questions could be satisfied on this particular call. In this circumstance, for their own protection, staff do not have discretion to accept other anecdotal identifiers.
To put it another way - it isn't an age thing, it is an attitude thing.
When I used to work in the banks contact centre (a number of years back) I assisted a 90-something year old woman with getting the banks app running on her iPad over the phone. This was going through the whole registration process, installing the app etc. She was getting frustrated with calling up and wanted to do things in her own time. I also remember I had to walk her through setting up an iCloud account. The whole phonecall was around 1hr.
I got told by one of my colleagues not too long ago that she phoned up again saying she got a new iPad and was impressed with the previous person who assisted her (over 2 years ago) and named me. I left a lasting impression on her and basically changed things (for the better). She knows she can still call up anytime, but now has the power to do things herself without the need of somebody else. She states that she loves the independence.
This person didn't understand technology - just had gotten into it because a family member bought her an iPad but had the desire to learn. Before that, she stated she had never used a computer or the internet.
Your age is not a barrier, your attitude is. Take my real life example. If you've got the attitude and determination to do something then you'll do it well.
Also, your computer is not a limitation. You're already using Geekzone so therefore must have a reasonably modern web browser with modern SSL support (and that is all that is needed). Your bank has a policy (see here) if you get scammed then you'll likely get your money back - also like I said, the bank has many checks in place also to protect you online. Nothing is lost, you only gain from this. I honestly say just give it a go.

MadEngineer: I’m curious - do the KB staff that are prompting for the security questions have the transactions list in front of them or are they forced to enter an exact amount before the account information is shown? Surely the former where they’d see that there’s no transactions as the customer has advised; which would then be acceptable as one form of authority proof.
If they don’t it would mean no one could call and say oh I think I spent about $50 at a flower shop the other day ... maybe Friday or Saturday? Too bad if that flower shop transaction is then presented as something weird like Decor Investments Ltd as some places have for their transactions. (Great for when your account is shared with your wife — like a certain strip joint in wellington that shows up as a stationary shop (not from experience haha))
Why would said stationery (note E not A, one spelling means no movement 😄) shop be open at the hours someone might frequent the other joint and why the need for more than one purchase on the day? Could result in a interesting line of enquiry from said wife!!!! 😇

You are certainly correct that it is an attitude thing and of course I wouldn't have any difficulty mastering it if I had to. My issue is just that the way I used to do it worked fine for me and I was happy with it and I don't like the way it has changed. But I accept that I will probably have to capitulate before much longer. I wish I didn't.

I bet if I ask you in a years time, once you change, if you feel that same way, you'd say you don't :)

Seriously - you'll wonder how you did without. I've heard everything you've said many many times now from different people.

I'm not sure. We old people like to shout at clouds. Thanks for your offer of help, by the way. I can work it out for myself if I have to but I appreciate the gesture.

I promise you, like a lot of things in life, it's way harder in your head, and the hardest part is taking the first step.
If you can work an Nvidia Shield TV out, I'm sure you'll be fine with IB..
I do have a question, please. Someone mentioned Android apps and of course most people use phones. Would I be able to use an app on an Android box used for streaming (not the Shield) and would this be secure?

You could technically do this but I personally wouldn't as it won't give you a great experience - stick to your web browser. You get more functionality in this and it is secure. If you want to test the ropes of a smartphone then you could in future grab a cheap and cheerful Smartphone (I'd recommend setting a budget of ~$200) and popping the app on that too but I won't scare you with this talk just yet. Lets just go with the basics to start off with.

You could just change banks.
Okay you don't like internet banking and you want to say age/attitude is the reason for not wanting to change (although I find it interesting that you post on a tech forum). How about phone banking then? No computer/smartphone required and it's a lot quicker.
Personally I don't think I would ever bother going into a (BNZ) branch anymore unless I was asking for a mortgage - and even then I think they have an option to do it online.
