Your identity doesn't change just because the date on your passport passes!

No, but an old photo might not accurately represent how you look now.

Yup, had this happen during a trip to AU many years ago....  was leaving Sydney to come home and I was asked if I had any other photo ID on me - the woman said I looked nothing like my passport photo. It was a 10 year passport, I was 15 (?) when the pic was taken, and 22 when in Sydney :D I didnt have any other photo ID because it was time of the paper license. She let me go anyway, but advised I might want to get something :)

No, but an old photo might not accurately represent how you look now. Also anti-counterfeiting technology is improved so an older style ID is easier to forge than a new one. If people are going to ignore expiry dates, why bother having them?

There may be travel related security reasons to expire them. However if you are merely talking about opening a bank account, and it forms a part of various supporting documents and the photo is clearly you, it seems pointless to concern yourself with the fact that you can't use the document to travel.

I had an argument with the UK version of the IRD about something similar, needing to prove my identity I produced my NZ passport since my UK passport expired more than 10 years ago and I never replaced it. They tried to claim that it did not prove my id and that I needed to get a UK passport.

I told them to belt up, pointing out that my citizenship was a matter of birth and parentage (they already had my birth certificate) not a matter of which passport I happened to own at the time. Eventually they saw sense.

I honestly cant remember the last time I received anything from the govt via post

You will have both received a letter from the Electoral commission in the past month or two confirming they you are enrolled to vote in the local body election in October...

Also printed copies of e-bills from Spark. VF or a power company that contain you address are also usually acceptable

We were told had to be govt related - power/phone isn't.

Good point on the electoral letter..... dunno what happened to those tho :D

Car Rego reminder should work too.

You mean they AML verified you via your DL without you being there in person? That's not how it's supposed to work.
