cisconz: The other issue is that Eftpos New Zealand charge an extra $10 per month per machine to have an eftpos terminal connected via IP, no idea why as it is cheaper for both the client and ENZ to run it over IP.
This is part of the issue as retailers don't see the benefit of running over ip so don't.

I know that TWL Silvia Park run 20 terminals over a single dial up connection that stays online all day everyday - waste of resource in my opinion.

That's because they run through the Gen-i portal who charge a monthly connection fee.

If retailers have a dedicated analog line for EFTPOS, they can do away with this which would save $30-40 a month due to line rental. IP significantly increases the speed of transactions - which helps when you have 5-10 people lined up at a bakery for example.

On IP the terminal can just process and send the information, rather than having to dial the network which can take some time.

People running terminals over dial up also experience more comms issues, much happier merchants when running over IP.

Also, chip card transactions will always take a bit longer to process - due to the chip actually talking / handshaking with the terminal, rather than just reading the information off the mag stripe. More security & more data being transferred.

Mkay. New card arrived in mail today. Unable to activate pin online because skinny isn't supported for net code or whatever their authorisation service is called. So had to call up, write a 16 digit number down, call another number and enter that in, and did pin over the phone. Very quick. They said cheque account should automatically be assigned to this card so I guess the moment of truth will be shortly and see if it does work or else it will be very embarrassing.
