All of them are over-simplifying. I could use my MasterCard (Credit) card the same way, if I felt so inclined - my Cheque account is linked to that as well.
A Visa Debit (or MasterCard Debit) card is just a credit card where instead of having a credit balance it simply uses your transactional account balance instead. You use it as a Debit card rather than EFTPOS card by hitting Credit. Period. If you use it any other way, you're just using the linked accounts function to use it as an EFTPOS card instead. Which is fine by the way - I can't see any reason you'd want to use the debit function anyway when you're physically present at a store.
One thing to note though, and this just occurred to me, is that places like Domino's actually process the Credit Card transactions by manually entering the card details into a Paymark/EFTPOS terminal (this is why they always give you an EFTPOS receipt to sign). If their EFTPOS is configured to reject debit cards (a debit card can be distinguished from a prepaid or credit card, so this is possible - if they're using blended rate then they would want you to use EFTPOS instead of Credit with one of these cards, though with interchange+ it's not a huge deal) then you would not be able to use it even online because the manual keying into the terminal would fail.
Kyanar:1080p: So if I put any address in the billing field of my debit card it would still process?
Pretty much, yup.sonyxperiageek:
But you're not supposed to use/press "credit" on the eftpos machine with Visa debit, you're supposed to use either "cheque" or "Savings".?
Incorrect. "Credit" is what you pick to use it as a debit card. Otherwise, you're simply using it across the EFTPOS network as a regular EFTPOS card. Merchants prefer this of course because it costs them less (assuming they are, as most are, on blended commission rate rather than interchange+).mrtoken: Make sure all your details are what shows on your card/statement i.e. address is 100% correct, name on card etc.
If everything is fine, talk to your bank about it with websites/time etc, they will be able to tell you why it was rejected.
As mentioned, AVS is only really supported on US-issued cards. The address is not able to be verified directly, so it won't be that.
Also, the merchant cannot tell you why it was declined. We (merchants) get a code which is issuer specific as to why the transaction failed. The only one that we can identify on sight is Code 10. Other than that, we can tell you what the code was but only your bank can tell you what it means.

So you are arguing with what the banks themselves have said about how Visa Debit cards work, and you are talking about a bank issued Visa Debit card?
I believe your assumption of what a visa debit card is may be a little off.

This is in reply to my response as I can't be bothered removing all the quotes..
The reason why people chose a debit card was so they could use their own transactional accounts, right? So they would be using their Own money to pay for things rather than using "credit". So my bank told me to Only use the "cheque" option..
wmoore: Why can't there just be credit and debit cards. The debit card is linked to your main bank account only. None of this pressing of 'cheque' savings' or 'credit' The machine should be able to tell which type of card it is.
Kyanar: I've discovered with my Westpac Amex card that the machine acatually can pre-determine whether a card has only one account linked to it (inserting the card jumps straight to the PIN prompt).

No, my assumption is not. To use a Visa Debit on the Visa network, you push Credit. I don't care what your bank says in the marketing literature, that's how it works. To use it as an EFTPOS card across the EFTPOS network, you push Cheque or Savings. This isn't unique to Debit cards, it's also how my MasterCard works.sonyxperiageek:

They tell you that because when you're at a physical merchant and using the terminal, there's no point choosing credit since the merchant is obviously connected to the EFTPOS network and it can be processed that way cheaper and faster. If you were to choose "Credit" the Visa network would process the transaction as a Credit transaction out of your bank account same as if you do it online - except that the merchant would pay more as Visa and other credit card transactions attract a percentage of the total purchase price (around the 2% mark) in fees.

Because carrying more cards is annoying.

bradstewart: Interesting theory yet selecting credit has never worked with any of my visa debit cards.
