I think I read somewhere that you get a pin if you need to use your Amex at an ATM. That could be just US cards tho. How did you set your pin? Did you do it over the phone/online/request one to be assigned (they used to mail a pre-generated pin I heard).

My AMEX card is issued by my bank (I have one account that has both a Mastercard and an AMEX). I can set the PIN for either card in my banks mobile app or online banking

I was in Oz last week and I laughed whenever I saw a news article about this, thinking how behind they were.
I haven't had to sign anything since getting a credit card in 2001. I've since moved to a debt card and of course never use it in New Zealand preferring to use my old non chip EFTPOS card

Mixture of different results in Australia - put in debt card and
- transaction just completed
- asked for PIN (automatically selected Credit)
- manually selecting credit and entering PIN

Soon my debt card will expire and I will need to upgrade to Paywave (or Paypass - whatever VISA call there system)

Woohoo. My bank is now issuing the AMEX cards with a chip and contactless. They are sending me a new card

Did you ask for new card, or did your current one expire?

Plain in the neck mine not taking pin for transactions, as mean can't use it at pak and save fuel pumps, and other services like that where you use card without person present.

When I got my first card I swiped it through machine at bank, and typed in what I wanted for pin, but it only works at ATM machines.

Just came back from a couple of days in Sydney. Used PIN on my American Express in a couple of places but had to sign too in others.

First one of the retailers said his machine didn't read the American Express chip card so he swiped and asked me to sign. Interesting because other retailers had no problem with me inserting the AMEX and entering a PIN.

I then used the card to pay in a couple of restaurants. Two of those brought me the bill, I put the card in the leather jacket and waited to see - they collected the card, took to the cashier, swiped and brought back a receipt to sign. No offer for PIN. The third restaurant brought a mobile EFTPOS machine to the table, I inserted the card and entered the PIN, just like that.

So it's still a mixed bag.

I asked for a replacement as soon as I saw they were now doing it, and they were happy to oblige. They said they are going to be proactively issuing replacement cards over the next two months to all existing customers, so I would have got one soon anyway, despite my card not expiring for another 18 months or so.

Did my first AMEX contactless payment last weekend. Retailer must process offline, as it look about 4 days to show up on my online banking (My bank shows me pending transactions anyway - so as soon as they see it I can too).

Most retailers here seem to process NFC payments online.

It was interesting to see how things have changed in the US in the last few months with credit card fraud exploding out of control. I've just got back from 2 weeks over there and found I had to show photo ID virtually every time I used by credit card, something I've never had to do in the past. Because signatures aren't even required for most low value (sub ~$80) transactions and at places like gas stations pay at pump terminals there is no security at all, many retailers are seeing fraud go through the roof.

I read a story over the weekend while there about gas stations running new software to analyse cards at gas station pumps to try and filter out suspect cards that would require the customer to go into the store to pay, which would allow them to check ID.

The date for no signature is 18th October 2014, except for restaurants and cafes which are another year away.  Signature will still be accepted overseas on NZ issued cards, and overseas issued cards will still be able to use signature here.

When I was in LA and Vegas in late 2008/early 2009 we got asked for ID for pretty much every credit card transaction, but when I was in New York a year ago, I never got asked once.

Maybe it's a west coast thing?

For bonus amusement, you can report every single one of those merchants to their card issuers for breaching card acceptance rules.  Asking to see ID is actually forbidden in the merchant agreement!

Thanks. Rang BNZ, and they told me the new chip cards they have won't do PIN at EFTPOS, they also refused to supply me with new card ahead of schedule.
