tardtasticx: I think I read somewhere that you get a pin if you need to use your Amex at an ATM. That could be just US cards tho. How did you set your pin? Did you do it over the phone/online/request one to be assigned (they used to mail a pre-generated pin I heard).

ajobbins: Woohoo. My bank is now issuing the AMEX cards with a chip and contactless. They are sending me a new card

Did you ask for new card, or did your current one expire?
Plain in the neck mine not taking pin for transactions, as mean can't use it at pak and save fuel pumps, and other services like that where you use card without person present.
When I got my first card I swiped it through machine at bank, and typed in what I wanted for pin, but it only works at ATM machines.

It was interesting to see how things have changed in the US in the last few months with credit card fraud exploding out of control. I've just got back from 2 weeks over there and found I had to show photo ID virtually every time I used by credit card, something I've never had to do in the past. Because signatures aren't even required for most low value (sub ~$80) transactions and at places like gas stations pay at pump terminals there is no security at all, many retailers are seeing fraud go through the roof.
I read a story over the weekend while there about gas stations running new software to analyse cards at gas station pumps to try and filter out suspect cards that would require the customer to go into the store to pay, which would allow them to check ID.

I asked for a replacement as soon as I saw they were now doing it, and they were happy to oblige. They said they are going to be proactively issuing replacement cards over the next two months to all existing customers, so I would have got one soon anyway, despite my card not expiring for another 18 months or so.
