You don't have that, you get more of this. In fact, a lot more and a lot worse.

Direction. These days that seems not that important. If you just leave school at 15 and get a job thats direction. Too much I want it and I want it now IMHO (aka lazy and slack)

This kind of thing can be tough sometimes. You don't want to be a sucker but you also don't want to be heartless. I try to judge situations individually. I don't give if I think someone is just trying it on but I do if the person seems in genuine strife. I get annoyed by people who make sweeping generalisations, as in beggars are all lazy criminals with a fancy car around the corner. Maybe that is true for a few, but that can never be an excuse to not help anyone. I don't give money as a rule, but I will pay for food or transport to help someone out. I also give to selected charities when I feel able. Worse than the beggars in my opinion are the professional charity collectors outside supermarkets who trap passers-by and keep half of what they collect. That really is a scam.

Dont worry, wait until your kids are teenagers. Then you will be wishing back the days of "cheap" daycare.

I see Labour has a policy to make individual agreements with schools = charge no fees you get $150 per child per year. I'd like to see that as it will reduce the stress on some families around fees. Hopefully the next government whoever it is will adopt a similar idea.

That's where you're wrong... Just by using the word "salary".

Most people in NZ, that are even lower middle income, are on an hourly wage.

Lower than that, more of them casual.

Working 14hrs 6 days (for <$800) when you have kids means both can't work, or childcare gets all the money.

theres a person in Rotorua who every Saturday in the New World car park asks for money for a bus fare to get home as he was robbed.After he approached me for the third Saturday in a row , i asked him if he kept getting robbed why did he keep coming back , abused me and walked off.

I wonder...

I was in Rotorua many years ago, I was aproached by a rather scary looking dude asking for money for a ?(don't remember) to get home.
I wasn't sure what to think, but almost immediately a cop got out of a parked car called the guy by name and told him to eff off.

To this day I'm not sure how lucky I was.

One of the benefits of living in the genteel environs we do is that I have never seen a beggar in the village or the petrol station.

I'm not sure the local boyos would look kindly on that...there was a spate of burglaries a while back and rumours of someone getting a hiding still persist. Burglaries stopped all of a sudden though...

We get a few idiots wasting their tyre rubber on the roads out here sometimes but that is usually the worst of it.

These are my kid's generation. I know them pretty well. In general and on average - compared to my generation - they're better educated (and carrying the cost of that education as debt), and facing a much more judgemental society than my generation did - and a reality that economic opportunities are not as generous - and in many cases expectations are incredibly high.

There's nothing helpful having old farts perpetuate myths - such as the pathetic comments about them being "lazy and slack".

There's a few who try it down this way to. I always say I have 5 Litres in the back, where's your car? If they are genuine they'll tell you. If not, they will make up all kinds of BS - then you know it's for the local pub.

There are shelters that they could be sent to, if they have nowhere to go. There are places in Wellington that I wouldn't feel safe to walk these days, due to some of the weirdos hanging around the streets, which isn't a good indictment on a NZ city..

Everytime they talk about cleaning the place up all the bleeding heart types whine about it.

Had this guy coming up to me asking for money, told him no

There is a youtube video of this scam in UK, on the motorway, a guy on road side waving a petrol can, asking for money for petrol.
Had it happen to me as well, in NZ.
Not sure if genuine, but really, who runs out of petrol.
Sure if you going to be driving,, to make sure have petrol in car.

Am thinking would be kind of funny if we all start driving EV, and a guy waving a battery at me.

No, they dont, look at the number of "breakdowns" on the harbor bridge when its the first decent uphill part.

Your story probably mirrors many others in NZ at the moment.

Unfortunately this type of problem didn't used to exist a generation or two ago. Back then often the wife stayed at home looking after the children, and did housework, met up with friends etc during the day, and the Man of the house worked. People also tended to work a 40 day week, 5 days a week, not 7 days a week like many now do. People didn't tend to borrow large amounts of money. All education was free, as was health, houses were both cheap and affordable. However that was not the PC world we now live in. Today it is a far more consumer led society where everyone has to have everything now. People have become slaves to banks, by having to borrow huge amounts of money, because in order to afford to buy a house in many places, you now need two incomes to service the debt and pay other costs. Not unless at least one person has a high paying job. As well as a huge mortgage, many also have huge student loans. It is a bit of a mess.
