I have had both over a long period and never had issues with either that I would attribute to brand etc.

Never had either refused. They both run promos from time to time sponsoring different things but still nothing really noticeable.

I have not come across anywhere here that only takes one or the other, that is common overseas where they are more involved in the processing side of things.

As an FYI

The places that accept an AMEX card are becoming less by the weeks.  I run one for work and am regularly using my "personal" card

Sort of feels the same with a normal credit card. If you don't have a linked cheque/savings account on the card you'd be in trouble.

Ask amex why they are so crap to merchants with high fees and slow settlement and why you should keep using them if nowhere will take it. Reminds me of when someone I know had a diners card as a work fuel card. Effectively useless.
