Debit "VISA" cards not being accepted?

DeroyBoy: I tried pushing credit on my ASB Visa debit at the gas station today.

It was Declined - Invalid Transaction.

That was on the purchase of fuel, no cash out or anything else.

Gas stations are a bit of a different beast - there are so many extra things only places like gas stations and hotels can do with a credit card you'd be shocked at. Was that using pay at pump or in the store?

This is what I've seen for the past 4 or 5 years of having a debit card. I tested this today, same thing happened at Countdown and also when I bought my lunch at a bakery. Both places accept your standard Visa.

I believe your assumption of what a visa debit card is may be a little off.

No, my assumption is not. To use a Visa Debit on the Visa network, you push Credit. I don't care what your bank says in the marketing literature, that's how it works. To use it as an EFTPOS card across the EFTPOS network, you push Cheque or Savings. This isn't unique to Debit cards, it's also how my MasterCard works.

The reason why people chose a debit card was so they could use their own transactional accounts, right? So they would be using their Own money to pay for things rather than using "credit". So my bank told me to Only use the "cheque" option..

They tell you that because when you're at a physical merchant and using the terminal, there's no point choosing credit since the merchant is obviously connected to the EFTPOS network and it can be processed that way cheaper and faster. If you were to choose "Credit" the Visa network would process the transaction as a Credit transaction out of your bank account same as if you do it online - except that the merchant would pay more as Visa and other credit card transactions attract a percentage of the total purchase price (around the 2% mark) in fees.

So if I go to a (physical) merchant and use their terminal, will they accept if I press the "credit" button for my visa debit?

joker97: to those who wonder why you would push credit instead of the cheque button, visa has some benefits to the buyer eg you can reverse the charge in a dispute, and maybe other benefits

Apart from that it doesn't work in all the stores I've tried..

Also, if I do press "credit" with my visa debit, will I be charged a transactional fee or any miscellaneous fees like that?

It's not a theory. And I've never had a problem using my debit card as a credit card even in stores (mostly to be vindictive to fish and chip shops that take Visa and charge $0.50 for sauce) until I got a MasterCard and stopped using it. Nope, not off at all. And um, FUG violations aside (you do realise personal attacks are a violation right? I'll refrain from stooping to your level) I've never had the "Credit" option fail. There are, however, several places I've been to where credit transactions in general fail (even with an actual credit card) unless you pre-warn the merchant so they do something different.

Anyone noticed that with some of the newer machines when you use a normal "credit" card (without a chip) that the merchant has to push a button to verify your signature is the same as on the card, yet they can't actually do this because they can't take the card out of the terminal and your signature is on the card.

Do people still use signatures on credit cards?

I think only the ones without a chip.

Why would a non EMV complianty card be in the terminal? Since it has no chip you would just swipe the card.

I've found a lot of places, especially restaurants, go yes to PIN bypass without asking. I assume it's because the receipt that gets spat out then has a place for you to write in a tip amount. I always put a big line through the area on the receipt in case a dodgy person decided to full in their own tip after you leave.

Another thing, I have now twice been asked to enter a pin at maccas. I thought they did that big deal about not needing a pin there. Has that changed?

my visa debit works on everything. the only problem i encountered was in Japan. No problems topping up phone or buying pizza from pizza hut. sorry dominoes.
