I think that this iPad mini that I'm typing this on is a waste of money - what were apple thinking by not putting in a better display? The size is excellent but the display quality is subpar for the small screen size.

See it's this damn small screen didn't read it properly - out of interest how much did you pay for LASIK

Unless someone else ninja-edited, then you have it backwards - I'm saying LASIK was the best money I ever spent... It was about $6000 for both eyes in mid 2008... The outcome was better than I could have expected. There were a few months of minor night-time haloing, but that's gone and I have better than 20/20 vision in both eyes...

I've often thought of doing this but don't feel confident doing it in NZ. I would go to the US or Europe for it I think.

REALLY??!? Even back in 2008 we had some of the best equipment and people here... My dad as an Air Traffic Controller knew a heap of ATC and pilots that did it and had NO horror stories. I'm not sure it's rational to suggest it's worse or riskier in NZ.

Yep, front loader ;) I always will have now that I have a dog that unloads it for me ;)

If my dog did that, I'd have to wash the dog groz off the clean clothes so it would be counter productive!!

I hate to break it to you, but if you think anyone gets "good" at any type of surgery without "practice" you are mistaken. Plus 6+ years of "practice" should make them very "practiced" and therefore you are very safe. Plus having the procedure done in NZ, means you are covered 10 ways from Sunday in the unlikely even of some thing going wrong.

Covered maybe, although I dislike relying on the government for anything and have never yet claimed on ACC since moving here 10 years ago.

That's my point exactly: I don't think they get enough practice in a country of only 4 million, most of whom would never pay for that. ACC is all very well but little help if you've gone blind in one eye really. Especially if you are a working photographer.

Someone doing that procedure in California (someone good, I mean) is likely to see many more patients in 6 years than someone doing it here, logic would suggest. Californians are generally more vain, wealthy and certainly more numerous.

I could be convinced - I have not seriously researched it - but logic pushes me to think Californian practitioners would be more practiced. And more wary of being sued so less 'she'll be right'.

I got iLasik done at the Eye Institute about a year and a half ago with good results. I hadnt been wearing glasses long, blurry vision came on quite suddenly in 2009.. I think possibly 2 late night programming sessions in a row too many.. it was quite shocking being recommended glasses, because I had never experienced less than perfect eyesight before. My perscription was quite slight (compared to most?), but I had astigmatism so contact lens were a bit funny.. I had no problems putting them in or taking them out (it's funny how quickly a person can get used to more or less touching their eyeball??) but contact lens dont seem to suit astigmatism because even small movement in the lens when blinking affects your vision. I think I spent about $5000 on my operation. My "bad" eye which had the worst astigmatism still has a little, but it's too small to have a second operation (they do free operations later for minor corrections). I'm quite pleased getting my life back. Glasses changed my life a bit, not being able to walk in the rain or have any sort of peripheral vision anymore due to the frames of the glasses covering just enough that you need to physically turn your head to look right at any object or person you suspect may be directly outside your direct field of sight.. every now and then I wake up in the early hours of the morning briefly, I gaze over at the digital alarm clock at the other side of the room and it makes me happy that the red digits are so crisp in the darkness... I guess the down side of the operation is that you have to do some eyedrops a few times a day for maybe 3-6 months? just to keep them hydrated better, and to also prevent infections... but the things they say about it being pain free are actually true. You can sorta see what they're doing, and its scary because the natural reaction to seeing medical staff do their thing is, "oh when is it going to start to hurt? this will hurt soon right?". People asked me why I didnt do it overseas for a cheaper amount and have a holiday too, but ilasik sometimes requires a corrective surgery.. so if you had to go back to that country to have 1 or 2 corrections.. the profits evaporate.

In conclusion, I never regretted spending money on my laser operation either. (I'm still on topic, right mods?) :)

Yah same here, I looked at them at the home show last year, couldn't justify the cost + all new pots and other cookware. This year I found this:

I believe this is similar to "Friends". Filmed on film but edited and broadcast in standard NTSC. Then later digitised from the original film, re edited(!) in HD and rereleased. Pretty cool.

Second VR4 - A white sedan with all the extras I would have wanted myself, when it was written off I got $5,000 from the person that hit me, purchased the car back for $500 and sold the parts for another $6,000. Would still rather have had the car tho.

My first horse, an older TB who was everything that I wasn't looking for and only ticked one of my boxes as he was a gelding!

My third horse, he was and is everything I could imagine a horse to be, talented in his field and safe as houses, I would put anyone on him!

My first LCD TV a Sony 32 inch that is still going strong 6 years later.

My set of rachet spanners, OMG these have saved me soooo many times!

"Expensive" shoes. For years I bought cheap sneakers from the Warehouse, but they never lasted for more than a couple of months before the heel would collapse like a souffle. About 7 years ago I took the plunge and bought proper sneakers from the Shoe Clinic. My feet haven't stopped thanking me, they've lasted for years and years, and the average cost (compared with the cost of buying new shoes from the Warehouse every few months) works out much better. I just refuse to buy cheap shoes anymore - it's a false economy for me. I've bought two pairs of sneakers from them (one pair of miAdidas customised to my feet), one pair of court shoes for badminton, and one pair of business shoes. Not only do they last, they feel as comfortable as they did on day one.

I found this exactly, my example are Doc Martin casual shoes, they last for ever! Usually I wear the outside edge of the soles on most shoes, with the DM's they just don't wear at all.

I have had 3 pairs in the last 6 years and 2 are still going with the first I left outside and they got wet so I stopped wearing them.
