So given that I fly with AirNZ maybe twice a year and use SoundsAir the rest of the time (I leave the country maybe once every 3-4 years), sounds like I'll be putting this card that turned up through the shredder. Seems like an awful waste given how many other people also probably have no use for the thing.

I was momentarily excited at the prospect of using it as a more universal version of the snapper card, given the associated costs, I guess I'll keep waiting for such a thing to arrive.

IMO even if yo are using a normal CC, assuming 2.25% for FX comm. You've prepaid all flights and accom in NZ. If you spent $1,000 in a week overseas while there. That amounts to $22.50 and let's say you used the ATM on two occasions $15 (together), a total of $37.50 for an overseas trip. Yeah big deal....

Well you could stay away from NZ ATM machines and just use it for purchases (like a EFTPOS card) then you just have the $1 per loading fee. LOL. Could just pick up a free transactions account with Kiwibank (!) and not have the $500 requirement.

Edit. I think it is as useful as the airline checkin with cellphone via SMS. And the flight reminder SMS on time or delayed thingy. I gather many people just don't use those things.

I am on holiday in the UK right now and had mine sent to me over here I need to top it up today and try it out hopefully I can use it in the coffee shops here in london to pay for my coffee using the RFID option.

One question though, I can't see this in the FAQ: can this card be used on magnetic-reading only EFTPOS machines, or are those only for use on "smartcard" machines (the ones you insert the card)?

In the pamphlet that came with card in the mail, it seems to suggest that the magstripe is located on the silver stripe that has the words AIRPOINTS. However, when I tried it in a magnetic EFTPOS machine it didn't seem to work.

That said, I could've been doing it wrong.

Not sure what the stripe is for. The book does say that the stripe is not for merchants to use, they need to scan the flybuys? barcode. Re: the debit card for payment, I would think it's the chip card ie., slot in. I cannot think of anything else but at the airport for the stripe or at the AirNZ desk perhaps.

The stripe has to work for Mastercard, otherwise how would the card work on ATMs?

Good point.
Although, do we know for sure that ATMs work off the magnetic strip only? Perhaps they are also able to read the chip?

Here's a scan of the page 9 info from the OneSmart "QuickGuide" pamphlet that came with the card in the mail.

Surely that means it's just a regular credit card magstripe?

Oh the irony of banks forcing EMV security measures on us as consumers and forcing retailers to upgrade terminals to accept EMV cards, all while "exluding" themselves from complying and still maintaining and installing ATM's that only use the mag stripe rather than the chip!

Yep... And "ATM Protection Device" they seem to use in every ATM in New Zealand? Sure, very safe...

Got this from OneSmart support today:

I can confirm that it is not possible to use your OneSmart card by swiping the magnetic strip at a retailer. The Chip and PIN feature on the card is for your own security and will be required to make any transactions within New Zealand or overseas.
