Debit "VISA" cards not being accepted?

richms: Another thing, I have now twice been asked to enter a pin at maccas. I thought they did that big deal about not needing a pin there. Has that changed?

I was under the impression that only worked with Mastercard didn't it? Not too sure on this one. I know I've never had a PIN bypass at McD's with any of my other cards but I have with my Mastercard, and it doesn't do that any more. There was this one time it did it with my EFTPOS card too but not since then.

From what I understand you can use the credit function on a visa debit at certain stores - the main reason to use it is because of the higher per-day limit when compared to a normal EFTPOS card. I guess it comes down to the merchant and what they allow with those that sell big ticket items probably more inclined to offer the facility when people want to make big purchases using cash from their bank account.

As for online issues; I've got an ASB Visa debit card and I haven't had any issues with either Dominos (there should be no issues as the order is processed online) or any other online store.

Most pizza places don't process the transaction online, they pass the card number to the store who manually enters it into their EFTPOS terminal as a "manual entry" transaction. This is why they give you an EFTPOS receipt that says "Accepted with Sig". Hell Pizza I know does not do this, and actually processes online, but Pizza Hut does it the manual way. Can't speak for Dominos right now.

DeroyBoy: I tried pushing credit on my ASB Visa debit at the gas station today.

It was Declined - Invalid Transaction.

That was on the purchase of fuel, no cash out or anything else.

Hi,

I have a ASB Debit Visa care and I never had any problems.

Why would you use credit when filling the fuel? Wouldn't you just use cheque? As its my thinking the Debit feature is only for buying things that require visa e.g online transaction like paying your rego online? As the debit card gives you the functionality of a visa but it isn't one.

I don't think you can just use the credit function normally. However I have not tested this but again there is no need to because the money comes out of the same account.....so you would just use cheque unless you can't then you use debit visa by pressing "credit".

How the hell is that PCI compliant if they have random staff members having access to the whole card number?

I assume it is treated the same way as a phone order, where you give the whole card number to random staff members over the phone.

The alternative is that their EFTPOS terminal is wired in somehow and processes the transaction from the online ordering system, but I very much doubt it -especially since I'm not sure terminals will allow manual entry transactions any way other than ... well, manual entry. Could be wrong on that part, someone with a terminal would have to chime in.

It was clearly explained to me that once in a computer system, you can only store the card number if essential, and that the whole number cant be visible to anyone but essential staff. Putting it on a reciept for all in the store to see is hardly complying with that.

If they are doing that, then I may as well just have a website that keeps numbers in a database then I punch them in manually to a terminal instead of worrying about handing off to an overpriced local processor or else the prefered option of paypal to handle the transaction.

Back in 2007 ish, I fat-fingered my credit card number (ordered online) when I ordered a pizza from Pizza Hut. About 10 mins later, I got a call from the store asking them to confirm the correct card number as it wasn't working.

So I gave the nice, helpful staff member the card number over the phone........

A couple of months later, a few transactions started showing up for WoW subscriptions... hmm, I thought, and rang the bank straight away.

I know Pizza Hut have upgraded their online ordering system since then, (well, the front end anyway) so I would hope that they have removed the ability of staff members to write down a card number and use it as they please.
