How do we recognize and trust when a stranger really is in need, or should we all just become desensitized to seeing people apparently at the mercy of kind strangers and ignore them all?

You can't recognise them really - but , I would say 99 times out of 100 any request for money is bogus.

I've had people approach me in the USA with the strangest stories, but ultimately requesting money. eg, I had an immaculately dressed  person come up with some story which may or may not have been true. I think probably not, but, because of their uniquely tidy appearance I gave some cash.   Usually people asking for money look like they've had a hard life.

...Or the new trend for jeans...

...and don't get me started on that racket the kids call music these days! What's wrong with a nice bit of Vera Lynn anyway?

You can't really walk anywhere in Wellington without seeing someone begging these days.

A favourite trick seems to be to sit next to an ATM and ask ATM-users for money.

Had an experience a couple of weeks ago where one homeless guy said he could have stabbed me if he wanted.  He was sitting down and I assume in retrospect he was all talk, but it got the bad adrenaline pumping.  I didn't stop to chat and kept my head on a swivel walking away.

That is just nasty, if he is saying that sort of thing, he has been thinking about it. It is also possibly a veiled threat. You also don't know his history, and he may have been in prison before. It should have been reported to the police. The ATM camera would have probably captured him. The thing is what if he did end up stabbing someone else, if that had happened to me  would feel really guilty for not reporting i, as reporting it could have prevented it happening. The problem in NZ is not enough of the crime gets reported, people just let things go because they think police are already overstretched etc, which then affects police funding, as their stats show crime isn't that bad.

The specific nasty incident didn't happen at an ATM (sorry, I can see how it reads that way). It's more a pattern of obnoxious behaviour I see - 3 people were sitting in front of the ANZ ATM on Manners St yesterday.

The incident occurred as I was walking through a minor street at night.  I could have told the police but I wouldn't be able to ID the guy (hoody, bad lighting etc), he would have moved on after the encounter and I had somewhere to be.  In hindsight I do believe he was just jawing and no real threat.
