When does that happen? Guessing the change will involve new cc number.

I have a mastercard zero that is still working, but notice all the links to mastercard on Kiwi bank go to Visa.

Most banks are aligning themselves with one card, and Visa seems to be winning that battle. Both ASB and ANZ offered both and dumped Mastercard a year or two ago switching solely to Visa.

You can probably conclude they get a better deal from Visa..

I have some theories:-

1. Bring all the cards under the Visa banner. Previously they used Mastercard/Cirrus for the credit and EFTPOS/ATM cards while debit/travel cards were Visa. This move results in all their credit, debit and travel cards being Visa cards. I'm not sure if this move covers their EFTPOS/ATM cards which are currently Cirrus cards (a Mastercard network for ATM cards). They could also move these cards over to PLUS/Interlink (Visa's equivalent networks for ATM/EFTPOS).

2. Introducing Apple Pay. I note none of the other NZ based issuers offer Apple Pay on their Mastercards. I wonder if there is a reason for this. Perhaps Kiwibank are keen to offer Apple Pay and can only offer this on their Visa cards.

3. Visa offered a sweetener. I wonder if this is also the reason why other banks have also dropped Mastercard in favour of Visa.

Would be interesting to know the real reason but I suspect we may never know.
