rugrat: Last time I brought car 5 years ago, if I put it on my card they were going to charge from memory an extra 5%. I don’t want to pay an extra $1000 on a $20000 purchase! My cash back is less then 1%.

Most people probably buy on credit and pay the car off over time, I prefer to pay on one payment and try to get best price on car for doing so.

Nah, paid in full - something I do with all cards. I had the money just wanted the cashback. They didn't charge extra so there you go...

Geese: Kiwibank has a $5000 daily account transaction limit, and it's from all sources, and I learnt the hard way on that second part. Bank cheques don't count which is why they are better for this purpose.

Kiwibank's $5,000 limit is not all sources. It is ATM withdrawals, EFTPOS and debit cards, but not internet banking. I am a Kiwibank customer, bought a car last year, and I paid in full at the dealer via internet banking.

Getting a bank cheque can take several hours, depending on how close you are to a bank etc. Paying by internet banking takes seconds. Can't remember the last time I would have needed to use a cheque.

Yes seems you are quite right.

I was just repeating what I was warned in person about by the teller when I withdrew $5000 cash, and then it appeared they were correct when the subsequent automatic payment was declined despite have ample available funds.

Pity can’t pay by EFT pos. I’d be worried about typing in a wrong number in the account part for bill pay.
Couldn’t find max for bill pay on Kiwi bank, but limit is $50,000 on BNZ so looks like limits have gone up.

Either that or if car dealer is going to charge surcharge, I go to different one.

Kiwibank is dropping Bank Cheques at the same time so that rules out that option as well. A bit of a shame as I think keeping bank cheques would have been ideal. However possibly Kiwibank is aware of the other banks' long term plans and knows there will be eventually be limited (if no) acceptance of bank cheques anyway.

The other day I had to renew a deposit with Kiwibank and on my landline phone I keyed in my access number and then my password. This is all the personal verification I needed (don't have internet banking) and after that it took 10 minutes for a personal banker to come on the line. No amount of haggling can convince Kiwibank to give you more than the carded interest rate, so you have to give in or go somewhere else, which they often cheerily suggest you do (and I often have done).

And as to the music they played to me during the very short (for them) 10 minute wait, it wasn't exactly painful, but it wasn't all that pleasant either!

Not using internet banking is not an age thing. My in laws used internet banking until they passed away last year and they were in their late 80s . My older siblings all use. I am not young (don't qualify for Super yet) and I use for as much as I can.I seldom go near a bank or an ATM.

100% agree

My grandmother who has always been up with technology (apparently worked on the first IBMs here haha, had an opportunity to travel to new york over it) was using internet banking with ASB when it first came out and they charged you the $2 fee to use it!

Why not use TSB Bank? They are supposed to have the best customer service from any bank in NZ, and there is usually no hold time at all when phoning. You can also still make deposits via using TSB bank, via  kiwibank and NZ post branches.  Personally I have been with them for my everyday account since 1994 with no problems. The reason switched to them was a fee free account if you keep at least 5k in the account, and that included cheques. However I noticed that they have now begun charging an annual fee if you want a cheque book, so cancelled it, as I don't usually use cheques these days.

I use them for my mortgage and find them pretty poor. Same computer says no nonsense as any bank coupled with quite poor systems and a rubbish interment banking app.

I'm picking you use a different Kiwibank to me. I use them for everything and their phone app is great. I've just got back from a four week overseas holiday and their 'Loaded for travel' app was great, including real time updates for transactions in Europe.

Sorry I mean TSB. I have my credit card with Kiwibank and their app is much better than the TSB one.

Often banks also have limits on internet banking which can be a PITA. Often you have to phone them, or even visit a branch to get the limit raised.

I rung Kiwibank yesterday and needed to validate my information. I was asked the same question (name a recent transaction) but I haven't had any transactions on my account for about 7 years. This was no issue what so ever, they asked me some other questions which took less than 10 seconds and it was fine.

So to the OP, I guess it depends on the person you are talking to? This doesn't seem to be some overachieving evil bank policy that you imply.

I didn't think I was implying that, but it doesn't inspire confidence or speak highly of customer service (or even competence) if it depends entirely on the person you happen to be dealing with. That is hardly professional.

Apart from that, the supervisor insisted I had phone banking on my account, which was news to me. So when I was forced by her intransigence to drive a half-hour to the nearest Kiwibank to do the transaction in person, I decided to ask about it. The teller said I did have it and she gave me a new pin code since I had no idea what the old one was supposed to be. I just got around to trying it today. It doesn't work, of course.

I know buying a car has been discussed, but all you grown ups seem to buy from a dealer. As someone who buys from private sellers, the idea of me standing on the footpath having them look over my shoulder while I transfer the money on my phone is a no go, as is depositing the money the night before without the car in my possession.

I guess I'll have to face the staff outrage of withdrawing large sums of money as cash. Kiwibank also suck at that -I cleaned out a smaller branch once, with them resorting to denominations as small as $5.
