Their craftsmen make wooden lasts that match YOUR feet precisely and then each pair of shoes you order is made on those lasts. Better shoes you could not get.

Added trivia - they could make shoes today that would fit Queen Victoria perfectly, because they still have their lasts of her feet!

The price, you say? Ahem. If sir has to ask, he may be more comfortable seeking his footwear elsewhere....!

Wow! Yeah, I guess that's why I put expensive in quotes. Definitely compared to Warehouse shoes, my current collection is expensive, but probably not expensive in the grand scheme of things. Certainly not nearly $6000! :) Sir would most definitely be seeking more affordable footwear! Bet they would be comfy though...

Still - you've got to be impressed by the commitment to perfecting a craft, even if it sets you back almost as much as a reasonably good second hand car...

I got it from Amazon for about $75 delivered. I also got a reusable mesh filter instead of paper ones. So all up about $90NZ delivered.

I never regretted spending about a month's salary to pay for a well-known criminal lawyer to represent me in court when I was wrongfully arrested and charged for something I never did (yes - I know they all say that!) by a lying sleaze-ball detective constable back in the 1970s. I'll never know if I'd have had the same result had I not paid the price.

My only regret about that incident is that when the magistrate slammed down his gavel right in the middle of the detective providing glaringly obviously fabricated "evidence" in the witness box, threw the case out of court, reprimanded the cop, suggested that he could be charged with contempt, and that I may wish to seek damages. After a few seconds discussion with my lawyer, we decided that it wasn't worth it - as even if "winning", the lawyer suggested that I would be a marked man for life for the sake of proving a point and recouping a few dollars.

Ahhh - police "culture" back in those days. The detective constable went on to become a detective inspector.

I like them too; I do not have one, but when in Asia I always spring for Club rooms in the hotels and they usually have them. Brilliant things.

Mind you I do not adhere to the NZ philosophy that only coffee made in an espresso machine is worth drinking. Good coffee made with freshly ground beans in a drip filter machine is much preferable to me for daily drinking (and a decent filter coffee machine in NZ is rarer than hen's teeth!)

So I will add "good coffee beans" to the list and nominate Jed's Number 5 beans as best in NZ.

I have several bespoke jackets from tailors in the UK that set me back about $2,000 each over 10 years ago. Nothing like off the peg stuff - each one took about 3 months with 3 or 4 fittings and everything from the cloth to the linings to the buttons was chosen individually by me. Cloth was cut from a pattern made to measure just right for me and so on.

I'd have got to the shoes eventually...!

Very few seem to prefer quality to price in NZ though.
