I know buying a car has been discussed, but all you grown ups seem to buy from a dealer. As someone who buys from private sellers, the idea of me standing on the footpath having them look over my shoulder while I transfer the money on my phone is a no go, as is depositing the money the night before without the car in my possession.

I guess I'll have to face the staff outrage of withdrawing large sums of money as cash. Kiwibank also suck at that -I cleaned out a smaller branch once, with them resorting to denominations as small as $5.

Banks won't have a problem with it if you give them some notice. Banks don't actually hold that much cash anymore. From memory (about seven years ago) there would be less than $100k held at a fairly large bank I worked at.

I have some complaints about Kiwibank, but that isn't one of them. It is reasonable to let a branch know you intend to make a large withdrawal, and then it isn't a problem. I have also had good contact with them when heading overseas. Tell them when you are going and they won't block your account if you suddenly start making withdrawals.

Until my recent bad experience, I was always a fan of Kiwibank service. I didn't feel lost in the crowd, as you do with a large excessively formal institution. I regret the change.

Apart from that, the supervisor insisted I had phone banking on my account, which was news to me. So when I was forced by her intransigence to drive a half-hour to the nearest Kiwibank to do the transaction in person, I decided to ask about it. The teller said I did have it and she gave me a new pin code since I had no idea what the old one was supposed to be. I just got around to trying it today. It doesn't work, of course.

You appear determined to continue to inflict pain on yourself (-; Phone banking was a thing in the days before dial-up internet. Go straight to internet banking, you won't regret it.

If I was the seller, I wouldn't be accepting cheques at all given the very real risk of people writing cheques they know won't be honoured. Do private car sellers typically accept cheques?

To me transferring money on a phone or other electronic device seems the safest option by a long margin for both sides of the transaction.

I always buy cars from a dealer, but I have to confess to being slightly nervous about the (admittedly very remote) possibility of the dealer going bust in the time between processing payment and taking delivery of the vehicle. I always pay no more than a couple of days prior to the delivery appointment, but have considered if a bank cheque would be a better option to mitigate against this risk.

You appear to have removed the quote I was replying to -A Bank Cheque, not a personal cheque.

Their wait times have been something awful lately. With that said, I truly have no idea why someone capable of using this forum would willingly choose not to use online banking.
