I don't think that it's known for sure what impact automation/AI will have on overall employment.

But if in fact it does means fewer jobs, that means more competition for remaining jobs, that means lower wages - and if that also means that to allow for an (unknown) future that might look like that, "saving more than you need" simply won't be possible.

What will happen is that unless the bounty / profits from automation are redistributed, is that either eventually the owners of the automated factories will have their heads displayed on pikes in town squares, or they'll have to build robots to protect themselves from that happening.

I think we need to be pushing people towards owning shares and other forms of passive income from an early age. Probably via professionally managed funds for most people.   Basically we need people to be earning independently of their labour and without govt paying them welfare.  between the ageing population and the coming tsunami of chronic disease, govt won't be able to afford widespread welfare.

I've started KS accounts for my kids.  I put in enough to ensure they get the govt bonus each year.  Aggressive investment profiles.  Started at a fortuitous time, when there was blood on the floor in world markets.  Their funds are doing quite well.

If the kids aren't 18 then they won't be getting the tax credits each year.

Who gets the member tax credit

The member tax credit will be paid each year (around July/August) to members of a KiwiSaver scheme or a complying fund until you’re eligible to withdraw your savings, provided:

Even better, just give some unique strings of numbers, tell us it's cryptocurrency and therefore must be worth something, save all the hassle of making plastic paper and printing it, and reassure us that even if they gave us real money, we couldn't eat that either!

This time I do feel we're on a potential collision course with Karl Marx, denied of course because, well, commies.

I'm not sure Karl Marx would object to non-employment per se.  His beef around employment was largely that workers created more value than they directly needed (valorisation) and the additional wealth accumulated in the balance sheet of their employer.

Marx would object to individual citizens owning wealth.  It's this and a naive idealisation of the role of govt, that put his ideas at loggerheads with the human psyche resulting in subjugative governments in socialist states.

The thing that strikes me about any modern political system is the turds float to the top and the meek sink to the bottom.  It occurred under socialism too, but with fewer safeguards than in democratic countries.  I'm not sure what the solution to that is?

The countries that seem to do the least bad job, seem to be capitalist, democratic societies that have employed a socialist conscience.  In those countries there is state provision of necessities where required, without unreasonable state control, but probably still with more state interference than a lot of kiwis would find palatable.
