Based on what you've said above, should I be ordering "untagged", meaning I shouldn't need to shag around with any settings?

If your Bach is in a Chorus area, can't you just look at the active ASID on the ONT and see if UNI Tagging is on/off?

You do work for Chorus :)

Or ask a friendly Network Engineering guy :D

Earbanean: Out of interest, why wouldn't you just change to Skinny's cheaper ($55/month) plan?  No config changes, needing to touch the router,  etc.  Just login to Skinny account and change your plan.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that $55 plan is 4G / Wireless and not UFB like Quic's Walker plan.

So it would require another router.

Ah, yes you're quite right.  I'm personally on the 500/100 fibre plan and thought their plan below was too.

Because the plan I have now is fibre, and I want to stay on fibre. The $55 plan is served over fixed wireless.

Yep, as above, I wasn't aware 500/100 was Skinny's lowest fibre plan.  I was a bit surprised by that.  I wonder why they don't have a 100/XX plan?  As a more budget focussed brand, it would seem fairly logical.

Because I've never forgotten telco rule number 1 that I learned at Telecom training 101 almost 2 decades ago: Never use company tools/systems to directly look up the details of your own connection - or the connection of friends/family/colleagues. Say what you like about how strictly one should comply and in what circumstances, but I've known more than one person over the years who broke protocol and lost their job for it.

Still there are channels I can go through to confirm UNI tagging, which I will do.

100% on your views, also if you provision it wrong, my understanding is quic can change the VLAN settings anyway (via a work order) so it’s not a major issue given they support IPoE / PPPoE and both tagged and untagged.

I'm on my way down south to visit one of my customers tomorrow so I'm staying at my bach tonight as a rest spot. I'm delighted to advise Quic activated port 2 this morning, so I just switched the Skinny Smart 2 router from port 1 to port 2 and it auto reconnected - no drama at all, couldn't have been simpler!

Xile:

I was on PPoE but switched to DHCP recently when that became an option, just for curiosity. So currently on DHCP.

I don't see any option or settings for VLAN on the Google Home App.

DHCP can work with MTU=1500, while PPPoE works on MTU=1492. I think DHCP saves wrapping cost, so I use DHCP.

PPPoE will work with 1500.

Except in device limitations, one of our Asus routers won't accept 1500 on PPPoE, best it can give/accept is 1492

True, but on those devices I'd actually recommend PPPoE over IPoE if it can route it at full speed despite the MTU as to be fair you're not going to notice anything.

I'm running PPPoE on 2Gbit Hyperfibre with a Mikrotik RB5009 using baby jumbo packets to achieve a full 1500 byte MTU -

There are advantages in using PPPoE like knowing the state of your connection to the ISP as being a tunnel it can either be up or down.
