I'm the opposite. No way would I put in a system without a battery. Just remember that in Australia, as penetration increased, you now pay a penalty for feeding at certain times of the day. This can happen here, and basing your entire system design around feed-in tariffs, to me, is the wrong way to think about it.
I have a Tesla PW3 (new, as a warranty-replaced PW2) and panels I installed 6 years ago. In 6 years, I've never regretted adding the battery. From the start, I have used the use it, not sell it principle. I can never sell for more than the cost to buy. So, sun shining (or free hours, as I am on the Old Good Nights) and off I go. For a high-use large home, we cover small winter bills with a summer credit. Bar that I also have reticulated gas for some things (which I would not do now), we are grid-free about 9-10 months. Yes, you can add more panels now than when I did a 6.4/5 inverter setup, and today I would definitely go for the 10 inverter (which I now have free for later with the PW3). But looking at the system as a pure ROI, waiting for cheaper or going without the battery is, to me, not the way to go. YMMV, of course.
