They wont play mkv's over DLNA, so I installed plex on the TV, and that is largly sucessful, but I have just seen that I had over a million files in my user profile when I was backing it up.

Seems about 900+ thousand of them are just folders and files that the plex server makes with xml files etc everywhere since they are clearly too lazy to use a real database for things.

So, plex is going as its probably what was making the computer so unusably slow and I dont really see why I should have to deal with that mess just to share media out on the lan to a TV.

Is there anything else that people have sucessfully installed that will allow playback of 1080 movie and 720 tv show MKV;s to the TV with a usable user interface (so either file system browsing or a functional index) that *doesnt transcode* anything?

Dont really want to get a boxie because from what I have seen it wants to keep reindexing entire drives taking a long time rather than just looking for new files.

Built in storage tho, which is a huge problem as it means a HDD in the bedroom (noisy) and have hassle of moving stuff onto and off it, curating the portion of my collection that I put on it.

How do they handle playing stuff off the LAN, will it use the internal storage only for its index of things and leave the files on the windows shares etc?

Just change the file type from mkv to avi and away you go. Works on my Samsung TV.

My UA46C7000 plays 720/1080p mkvs via Twonky running under Ubuntu. I think the issue is the DLNA server and not the TV.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

I have never managed to get my c650 TV to play anything from either of my DLNA NAS drives for some reason, neither the Seagate 110 or my new Netgear ReadyNAS seem to be able to stream to the TV, yet from my PC no issues?? Hence I tend to agree its a server problem. I am still trying to work out where and if I find anything will report back.

Try mini-dlna if you want to network stream. Works for MKV files
