Hey everybody,

I am considering putting together the following for HTPC duties:

Asus E45M1-I Deluxe
Motherboard with integrated CPU - $258.02

Antec ISK 300-150 (Black)
Chassis - $114.28

Kingston ValueRAM DDR3 PC10600/1333MHz CL9 4GB
DDR3 RAM - $31.79

Crucial m4 2.5" 64GB
Solid state drive (SSD) - $129.00

I was considering going down the Apple TV with XBMC route, but I think I need the extra flexibility of a full PC.

Also, until I can afford a NAS, the media will be contained on an external drive, so the PC will be easier in that respect.

I will probably install Win 7/XBMC or XBMCbuntu.

Any comments on this setup for streaming HD movies/TV and also whether it will be painfully slow for other light pc duties such as web surfing...

Cheers!

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

E-450 = 750
Athlon X2-4200+ = 1147 (My old HTPC, CPU could decode 720P perfectly, and 1080P was "ok", but not great)
G620 = 2475
i3-2100 = 3854

CPU passmark score is low, but should be ok with DXVA compliant 720P/1080P/1080i
Anything HD that is not DXVA compliant might stutter.

CPU should be fast enough for XBMC but might be sluggish for Mediaportal

If you don't need mini ITX form factor then an G620 / G840 / i3-2100 with a $110 mATX mobo would cost between $200 - 270 but would be a lot faster.  Same could be said for the AMD mATX equivalent.

HTPC / Home automation (home assistant) enthusiast.
