We are having a very annoying issue with the Samsung TV (UA40 C6200) from 2010.

Just randomly the HDMI video will drop.
Sound will still go, but no picture.

Happens with Xbox 360, PC and Laptop.
Tried setting game mode, using a different graphics card. (Have a GTX 670 ! - so the issue happens on both AMD & Nvidia)
Tried using a different cable also.

I have updated the firmware twice, and I will check for a later version tomorrow, but has anyone else had this issue ?

I think the tv only has 1 yr warranty, but we got the extended warranty through harvey norman. I like the TV. Black colours are better than the newer Samsung LEDs which seem to be a bit more cheaply built. I hope it isnt going to be a case of claiming warranty.

Try turning off the HDMI control (CEC) functionality on all devices + the TV...
Failing that, it's time to drop the TV back into the store you bought it from.

Are the devices in seperate inputs? I have had trouble when using heavy duty HDMI cables and the curve of the cable so it doesn't become visable out the the was putting too much tension on the HDMI socket.
HDMI connections are rubbish in my opinion - very poor design.All that data on that crappy connector with no retainer.

Current setup is:

PC / Xbox / Laptops etc -> Pioneer VSX 921k -> Samsung UA C6200 TV

Everything plugs into the amp. The amp passes the video to the TV.

I have been checking the lights on the amp when it happens. The lights stay on and the sound keeps playing, so there is no loss of signal.

But on the samsung it says "Mode not supported".

I have the resolutions at 1920x1080 (native) and manually set to 1920x1080 on the Xbox too.
The other night the gf was playing with the Xbox Kinect and the TV decided to drop the signal with the error "mode not supported".

Tried restarting the amp, the xbox, the tv and unplugging and plugging cables in, but we have not been able to get the signal back !!!

Not impressed really..

I suggest setting it up in the most basic way possible to eliminate what is causing teh problem. eg. xbox straight into the tvs hdmi port. I see in the most recent consumer mag, that samsungs were ranked at the bottom of reliability, but the margin or error looked small. So I don't think there is much in the difference with reliability among the upper brands.

it's the samsung tv. mode not supported is a very common bug on those beasts ... just google it ... and there's nothing you can do - sometimes it happens, most of the time you get picture ...

Have had to take a laptop back to harvey norman before. Was a nightmare. They fixed the HP laptop , but only partially, and then sent us off to a company called visual group in Christchurch. (HP contractor to repair their stuff)

Needless to say the quakes happened and they wouldnt give us the laptop back and wouldnt pay for it either ,even though it was under warranty and under their care....

Anyone have any success stories taking things back to Harvey Norman ?
The tv has a 3 yr extended warranty with it.

But it could be a problem or compatibility issue with the amp, if the devices work finewhen connected directly to the tv. It sounds like one of those very annoying difficult problems to try to resolve. Possibily the only way to truely test it, is to connect it to another TV for a period. HN have been mentioned on fairgo a few times in the last few weeks.

Before you take the TV back, it actually needs to be diagnosed... otherwise you could spend a lot of time and effort getting items replaced / swapped / fixed - to come out no further ahead.

Step 1: try plugging your kit directly into the TV.
If it does work, then the problem will clearly be your receiver, not your TV.

If the fault still persists, try swapping HDMI cables.
If all of this does not work, then, by a process of elimination, it's a fault with your TV.
My pick, it's an issue with the HDMI handshake at the Pioneer VSX921's end.
Have you run a firmware update on the Pioneer? If not, do it... it could help.

I was told by one of the retailers that although samsung makes the panels for sony tvs, sony still make the driver boards that run the panel, and they said that sonys were superior. Perhaps ther margins on selling sonys were better, and that was a couple of years ago, so things may have changed. Reliability wise sonys are ahead in the consumer reviews, and personally I would chose sony over samsung, becuase I think they look far better design wise and have a better build quality.

It's true - Samsung and Sharp will make the panels, Sony will design the rest (no doubt using 3rd party components like most companies though). However, their TV's simply haven't progressed at the same rate. They have matte finish panels, which can be advantageous in brightly lit rooms, however, their cheap 8-bit panels don't necessarily fare well when viewed off-axis.
There are better out there...

Just an update on this thread incase anyone else has this issue: (Google will lead you here :D)

The problem appears to have stopped..... for now. Will continue to keep an eye on it.

Solution:

1) Reset Samsung TV & Pioneer VSX921k to their factory defaults.
2) Disabled video conversion on AMP (now just outputs the video to the tv with no processing).
3) Made the image fit to the TV screen via the TV's scaling.
4) Disabled scaling on PC GPU.
5) Set Xbox manually to be 1080p in the system configuration area.

So far so good.
