HI all,

I have this issue with my HTPC set-up where the audio quite often crackles; especially in action scenes.

HTPC is home-built computer with this mobo: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M2NVM_DVI/
No sound card fitted.

Audio connection is a basic cable from mobo to amplifier Amplifier is a 10 year old Prologic Pioneer (I was hoping to upgrade but the funds were needed elsewhere)

Could the issue be as simple as adding a sound-card with RCA? This was suggested by a mate.
Or am I looking at something more expensive?

Clipping in the digital stage will do that sort of thing on the loud parts. You could also be causing clipping in the DSP of the reciever. I had a horrid old sony on loan ages ago that would clip in the DSP if there was any form of bass boost or equalization applied to an already quite strong signal.

In anycase, try turning it down in the player application and turning the amp up and see if that helps.

Not the windows mixer as that will be attenuating it after whatever processing your player app has done to it. It is quite bad in VLC since its volume goes up to 200% which basically guarantees it will clip.

are you using VLC and setting volume over 100%?

do not set VLC volume over 100%, set it at 100%

turn down your PC master volume to around 70-80% if you mobo has a "line out" use "line out"

do not use "mic in" on your amp, use any other "line in"

Sorry - should have mentioned I am using openELEC on the server
