I sold my mums big old CRT on trademe (for $1 lol) but seem to have lost the remote during my recent house move. The people who took it were really nice and I feel bad so I said I'd mail it to them when I found it. I have not found it... I googled replacements and they cost dozens of times what the TV sold for so they are a no go.

Anyone had experience with the $5 universals on TM? Do they "just work"? TV was a Philips, so a well known brand at least

Most of the cheap ones work but may not last. What model is it? Maybe someone has a remote laying about :)

Chunghop are well known for their high-quality remote controls, can't go wrong with that one ...

I just re-read your post and realised it'll be someone else's problem :) so yeah go the $2 trademe remote.

If you only got $1 for it then let them find a remote.
Otherwise would have been cheaper to dump it.

I found a Phillips remote the other day when cleaning up the office.
More than welcome to it.

I'll try and find the TV manual at home and see what the model was.

It probably doesn't matter. Most manufacturers use a generic remote control command set for all their devices of same function.

Chunghop ones are pretty good. Worked for the two tv's I used them with and lasted about two years before I lost it in a move.

Not sure about your local refuse facility but it costs $$$ to dump TV's down here in ChCh... they dont accept any CRTs at the recycling place anymore and refer you to the main tip.
edit: too many tv's post quake and they are only interested in working flat panels now.

We have several electronic recycling locations here in Auckland where several times a year you can dump useless electronics for free.
