I've searched the net but I have been unable to find the answer I need.

I'm looking to buy a pair of headphones. They need to be wireless but also have the option to be wired.

After some research I am thinking of getting a pair of Sennheisers mm400x.

However, I'm unsure if they will connect to the tv (Panasonic 50UT50) or receiver (Onkyo NR515).

Can I simply buy a Bluetooth dongle for either the tv or receiver and they will automatically pair up??

I haven't found any headphones with the docking station / base unit than can also be wired, and I'd rather not have another thing plugged in.

The good news is that your Panasonic 50UT has RCA stereo audio outputs, meaning you can leave the base station plugged in at all times, and it won't effect the TV speakers volume.
This means you can mute the TV, and control the volume through the headphones... or, have the TV speakers working, with the headphones doing the same... or not, you can control the headphones independently!

What headphones will work?
Um... who knows? I've never even tried to look for something that ticks both the wired and wireless boxes, in the way you want to use them... sorry. There are bluetooth headphones that can be plugged in to save battery life etc, but really they're designed for portable use, and they're not cheap.

Thats cool to know about the stereo audio outputs, could be handy.

I know, it seems to be quite tricky finding the definitive answer. I wanted wireless because I sit about 5m away from my tv, but I also wanted wired because I do long distant plane flights.

I dont have the money, nor can warrant buying 2 different pairs of headphones either.

They look nice, pricey, but nice.

I have found a couple of forums where others have the same query.

I think I'm going to need a bluetooth transmitter rather than a standard BT dongle, but that's as far as I've got.

Need to find a definitive answer before I take the plunge.

There are bluetooth sending adapters that take analog in and turn it into something that you can pair with, but most are at best the mid rate a2dp codec so have a slight problem that they sound aweful like most car audio bluetooth and things built into cheap home theater in a box systems to play from a smartphone etc.

I am yet to see one that supports the near lossless apt-x codec on the sending side, and the recieving side is way more expensive to get apt-x on.

Ooh, nice find, might be busting out the visa shortly..

I had a slightly cheaper one that was just using SBC which is the aweful codec, gave it to someone else who wanted it and was happy with the sound.

Ive not seen any devices that send AAC audio, it should sound fine compared to SBC, but I dont know how it would do for latency which is one of the things that aptx was designed to be good for.

From what I've found those seem to be the only option to connect bluetooth headphones.

It has some pretty good reviews and it has aptx to fix any a/v sync issues.

Saying that, I'm not quite convinced, and wont be parting with my money yet.

So after much searching I think Ive narrowed it down.

Im considering the Sony Pulse Elite wireless headset, my only concern is that they appear quite bulky (will be used on aeroplane)
