Hi,

I need a bit of help. I have just purchased a Sony HDD - DVD Recorder (Model RDR-HX720) but am having troubles tuning into any Sky Channels. I followed the Basic auto channel tune in the manual but this didn't work. So I then tried to maually tune the channels but with no luck. I have followed the manual regarding cable set-up. I have my Red/White/yellow cables going from the Sky decoder to line 1 in on the HDD - DVD Recorder. I have the Red/White/Yellow cables coming from Line Out on the HDD - DVD Recorder to the TV (Sony Trinitron). The Aerial is going into the HDD - DVD Recorder, back out to the TV. This is what the manual states. Where am I going wrong?
I have been able to tune in channel 1, 2 ,3 4(Prime). 5 I want as Sky 1 but can't get.
On my TV, to access Sky channels, the TV has to be on 'Video 1'.
As you can see i'm a total novice. I want to be able to record Sky sports 1, 2 and 3. Is this possible? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Mike

Change the input source of the sony recorder to whatever composite is called on it. AV, cvbs etc? Maybe just pressed the source button(or similar) on the sony recorder remote to scroll thru all of them button until you get picture.

you are approaching it in a totally wrong way.
if you have something going into a "line in" you dont have to (or rather CANNOT) tune in to find it!

to find it you need to change your "source". if yours is like mine, the only way to do this (yeah silly sony!) is to open the sliding hatch at the bottom of your remote and there is the correct button to press. i'm not at home now so i dont know what the button is called. something along the lines of change/select input source/line etc ...

good luck! stop tuning and find the cleverly hidden source/video-in/line-in selector button!

My sony remote has far too many buttons. However the "input select" button is not hidden.

Making sure that everything is turned on, press this button until you see SKY appear. Maybe put it to a channel that you know will be SKY, like the weather?

Sony call it LINE IN. So that will appear on the diplay of the unit, and the TV when you press the "input select" button.

The "input select" button should be next to the number 9. And below the Program up and down buttons.

Alternative is to put antenna into Sky decoder RF in, Sky decoder RF out to DVD Recorder RF in, DVD Recorder RF out to TVs antenna in. DVD recorder will now be able to be tuned to the RF out of the Sky decoder as will the TV. My personal opinion is to avoid RF connections at all costs. I would also change the SCART to composite cable from Sky decoder VCR out (SCART) to an SVideo cable. DVD Recorder should also be connected to TV by SVideo or component. Latest firmware updates (depending on Sky decoder model) also support component on Sky decoder TV out (SCART).

Thanks for all the info.
I now realise what I've done wrong. i was trying to match my Recorder channels to my sky channels. For example putting my recorder on channel 5 and hoping that that would be Sky1, putting my recorder on channel 30 hoping that that would be Sky Sport 1 etc..
I have now put the recorder on channel 'Line 1' and that now picks up what ever channel I have selected by my sky remote. Problem solved without changing any of my cable setup explained in my first post.

So what i understand from this is that I can't record a sky channel while watching another sky channel. Is this correct? If so pretty dissapointed as I would have liked to record sports while the misses wactches endless sh#*t on the E-Channel.

Once again, thanks for helping a novice techie.

Yes that is correct you are unable to watch and record different channels.

You would need to subscribe to mySKY to be able to do that.

aha! i'm afraid sky is smarter than this :) maybe you shouldve gotten mysky for the price of the hdd recorder! costs a one off $599 and does exactly what you are after. i have that ... i dont need a hdd recorder :) the only setback is it doesnt give you the digital free-to-air tv channels but then again F1 and rugby is all i need :)

I'm not quite sure how you expected a PAL BG analog tuner (same as the TV tuner) to suddenly have encrypted DVB-S mpeg2 channels appear on it, given the satellite dish LNB (low noise block) doesn't even connect to it. If you had waited a year or so you could have purchased a recorder with a DVB-T (digital terrestrial) H264 (mpeg 4 part 10) tuner compatible with the Freeview digital terrestrial service to start in March 2008.

Hi Spyware,

As I don't know the ins and outs of HDD - DVD Recorders/Satelite TV or the like, I thought that a simple procedure such as recording Sky sport 1 while i watch a Sky movie would be an optiion. Obviously not. Nevermind as i got the recorder half price through a friend at Sony and main reason to get it was to play my floor to ceiling collection of Porn DVD's.

But thanks for the positive feedback.

Cheers
