Would be nice to have DAB radios like other civilised countries :-)

Anyone here in the know as to when NZ might decide to push DAB out ? The trials seem to have been going on for a loooooooong time.

I don't think anyone really wants it. These days you can stream radio via the internet.. I should imagine that the consumer electronic retailers may love it but I think it would be a nich market..

I suspect that answer will be never,

The radio stations don't want it,
consumers don't care
and internet services like spotify/pandora etc are introducing a huge amount of uncertainty over the viability of traditional single channel services..

Any idea how will it be delivered? Is it Pandora over RF like traditional radio or via the net, and if net who pays for the mobile data connection? Obviously you can already do this now via mobile to car stereo.

They are talking about streaming platforms which will continue to be delivered through the internet.

The problem with streaming over the net is that it does not scale very well. If everyone in Auckland was listing to the radio over their mobile connection it would be a serious problem for the mobile networks.

Will be interesting to see what happens in NZ, most of the rest of the world (with the US as one of the few exceptions) DAB+ is now being rolled out (or is being rolled out). Based on the DAB platform with an ACC+ codec. Something that allows for a lot of radio stations per frequency/mux.

In Norway the rollout of DAB and the governments warned FM-shutdown in 2017 its really starting to take off, both with DAB-radios being sold and radio stations getting on DAB+. The main capital have never had so many 24-hour radio stations are getting now.
