Hi all

I was wondering if someone could help me out with my Samsung 40 inch tv. I have had this TV since December 2010 and the panel seems to have this weird zone on the top third of the tv. It seems to be something wrong with the panel i think. The zone is pretty much a straight line near the top third of the tv where the coloration gets all messed up.

I was hoping someone on here can possibly just look at the images and be able to tell me what the fix for this could be or roughly how much it would cost. I know 40 inch panels are quite cheap right now, but if 100 bucks or so fixes the current tv, then why get another one. I called up samsung and checked with them but they want the receipt for the TV if they are to come and have a look free of charge and i cannot seem to trace the receipt. It is no longer under warranty but there should be something that I can do?

Well most of the TV is the display panel, I don't think you can get a replacement panel for cheap.

You would be better off getting a new TV for cheap, 40 inch TV's can be purchased for around $800 now.

I couldn't find any place to buy a replacement so I can't give you a figure.

You probably won't have any luck without the receipt, but I'd CGA claim it if you can find it, 3 and a bit years is not reasonable for a brand name TV life expectancy.

There are few suggestions about re-seating some panel connectors - depends if you are prepared to have a play with it I suppose.
Obviously a TV can have high voltages within and the normal safety considerations should be made.

Though your TV display seems to be darker on the left and almost fades to ok on the right...

If you know roughly when you purchased the set and used a credit card then your card provider should be able to trace the transaction. Once traced go to the retailer with the info and get a duplicate receipt and request action under the CGA.
I've managed to do this twice with different purchases that died out of warranty.

Hang on, you can't just say that.
CGA decisions are based upon the purchase value, application and amount of use.
If something is top of the line and not used often, it should last a long, long time!
If something is entry level, used all the time... well, they won't just say "you get a new TV / a free repair".

More facts are needed in this case.

For the record, if you go through the process, you will end up with a compromise, where you pay some of the repair / replacement cost, while the retailer pays the balance.

thanks for the advice guys. ya i am not sure how it even started. I just turned on the tv one day and that line was there. It does go away sometimes after about 10 minutes or so of being on, but not all the time.

The TV is not top of the line, its midrange. It was used in the bedroom for a couple of hours a day. I was going to ask Noel Leeming if they can trace through their records and give me a reprint of the receipt.

I dont mind paying to repair for the tv, but I wanted samsung or their technician to tell me how much it would cost before committing to the repair. But samsung said they need the receipt for the tech to come out and do an inspection else it will cost for the inspection

When I had a look for your issue on the Web there were many similar reported. Doesnt of course mean that Samsung tvs are all bad - they sell squillions sobthere will be issues. Anyway... Often it was reported some board needed replacing. Even on tvs that were 2-3 years old the parts seemed unavailable. Just saying that you might not be able to pay to get it fixed. So I think the advice on pushing the cga is probably a good place to start. If it cant be fixed does Samsung owe you a new TV?....

A friend of mine had one of these (don't know if the same model, but was a D-series like yours).
It did basically the same thing - a portion of the screen dimmed out/different colour.

He was told it is basically dry joints, but got it replaced, not repaired. He had an extended warranty however, so had no dramas. If someone knows if these can be repaired, it'd be good, because they did not take his old TV away...

I'd say you have a claim under CGA - the D-Series got replaced by the E-Series in about April/May 2012 so it is not that old and I would expect a TV to reasonably last more than 3 years.

I went down to Noel Leeming yesterday and managed to get a receipt printout of the purchase. Turns out, I was wrong. The TV was purchased back in 2012 (bad memory on my part). So the TV is actually just above 2 years old. So I actually expect it to be covered under CGA.

I have contacted Samsung for them to send in a techie to come have a look at the tv. Thanks everyone for the advice. I will update once I know what is happening. But I gotta say, my trust in Samsung products has definitely shaken up a bit.

I actually usually lean towards Sony TVs (have always had good experience with them). My sister actually picked this TV out for herself and I have inherited it.

So long as they fix it, it should be fine.

I am pretty sure yours is the same model as a friend of mine had - his did the same, and I think it is relatively common (not a large percentage, but enough for Samsung to know about the issue).

na, my sister bought it. We live in the same house so now the TV has come to me.
