Hi all,

I was thinking about buying a Multimedia Player / HDD Enclosure like this http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/drives/7b1c/.  Basically it's a HDD enclosure (you plug in your own 3.5" IDE HDD) that will take any media on the hard-drive and play it on your TV.  You plug it in to your computer via USB2 and suck off any videos (including DVD VOBs, AVIs, DIVx, XVID, etc), music or photos and then hook it up to your TV/Stereo to play them back.  Fancier models come with WiFi that allow you to stream or copy files from your computer wirelessly (could be slow).  Costs about 100 pounds or $US 200.

Anyway, does anyone know of a NZ-based retailer who sell these or similar devices.  I haven't found anything via google, except a trademe sale of an old model.  I'd rather not buy from an overseas retailer.

Thanks,

Jonathan

Hi JonC,

I know nothing about this, but Jama has looked into it and got a Modix. Have a look at his review.

i have an Al-Tech MG-25 unit which is similar to the device you linked, but a 2.5" one: http://www.airlinktek.com/english/prod_mg25.htm

It worked really well, but since I built an MCE machine I only use it as a portable device.

QMB Computers have the 2.5" and 3.5" models on their books:  www..qmb.co.nz and search for "al-tech"

If i was to buy a new "portable" unit now I would probably be tempted to buy one with a built in screen like the Archos units.
