Hi all, with the abundance of TV models out there and its a bit overwhelming to be honest. Just wondering if anyone has done some research or hands on experience with 4k 65" passive 3d TV's

Want direct back lit as we have a 55" side lit LG and it can be pretty poor on the dark scenes with light bleeding into the image from both sides. Make and model doesn't bother me, we use external speakers so TV sound is not important, don't even use smart TV features and I'll be feeding a popcorn hour into it so its media playing capabilities are not important either, just actual picture quality is what we are after. Must be passive 3D as the active 3D makes me ill )I'm one of the unfortunates that see the rainbow effect on a DLP projector)

Price is big factor as I need to be able to justify the upgrade but saying that I'm happy to wait a while until the new models drop in price. My wife is a nurse so we get the emergency services price at most major retailers so that's a big plus.

Had a look at the new curved TV's and it didn't really jump out at me to be honest. Wouldn't dismiss it but it seems a bit gimmicky. So, any suggestions/recommendations please?

Samsung, Sony and Panasonic make UHD TV's with active glasses...
So that leaves you with LG.
The LG's have nice panels, but all the 2014 models are smart, it is what it is really...
The top of the line 2013 model is nice, but the built in (drop down) soundbar would be excessive for you. Having said that, if you can find a end of line 2013 TV for a good price, you could be onto a winner? BUT, it won't be HDMI 2 (UHD 60Hz) compatible.
I'm not familiar with their 2014 models, but they could be worth looking at?

Regarding the Sony 65" 4K TV's ( I have one)

The KD65X9004A is 3D Passive but the KD65X8504A is Active. Most people who compare the 900 and the 850 think the 900 is a lot better (altho the 900 is slightly newer)

The KD65X9004A has HDMI 2.0 As well if you care about that kind of thing in the future.

You should be able to get one for around $7000

Is the Sony really HDMI 2?
I was lead the believe there would be a firmware update in NZ to bring it up to HDMI 2... but at the time of manufacture, there was no set spec for HDMI 2, and now the TV is not able to be updated?

Of course, it's a moot point as there's no HDMI 2 source.

Don't buy a 4k television without HDMI 2.

I don't know what LG's 65" 4K television is like but HDTVtest described the 49" model as one of the worst televisions they've reviewed.

Backlit is preferable to edge lit but not all edge lit televisions are going to have the severe flashlighting your current LG has.

The AX800 is the best of the current 4K models despite being edge lit

The Panasonic AX900 is expected to be back lit and will be available later this year.

If price is a big factor I doubt the value of buying a 4K television now. They will come down in price and as they're new the New Zealand retailers are charging high sticker prices.

The Sony 4K TV's had hardware which could do HDMI 2.0 when it was released but about 6 months ago they released firmware to enable it. Most of the latest 2014 AMPS being released have HDMI 2.0/ (Onkyo has HDCP 2.2 as well) on them but yes there is (at the moment) no HDMI 2.0 sources for example media players but they will be out very soon.
