This looks like a pretty good idea, just hope they will make it possible for it to play divx/xvid files also...

Wasn't the PS3 console meant to support a Linux distroy anyway? And therefore you would be able to play divx/xvid files on it?

Yes you can install just about any flavour of linux on the ps3. Using mplayer you can play back divx, mp4 files etc. However from what i was reading a few months ago you still cant play blu-ray or HD h.264 etc videos due to the rsx chip being locked down.. As soon as xbmc has been ported over to linux ill get a ps3, purely for media centre purposes.. it will be a sad day when i retire my xbox, lol
Linux has also been successfully installed on the xbox360, however that has its own problems (no audio codec..) so playing divx on this is useless too..

Hacking the PS3 to play divx etc. sounds a little risky. I also have seen it work as a media extender - playing divx etc. files off a server running tversity (www.tversity.com). That works pretty well and is a solution I am looking at.

Hacking the ps3? huh? Its perfectly legal to put linux on the ps3, there is an offical version called Yellow dog, through Yellow Dog linux you have an abundance of legal software that works on the ps3, mplayer and vlc to name 2, which are more than capable of playing mp3's, divx, xvid, mp4, wmv etc etc etc.. So as you can see there is no hacking and there is hardly any risk.. If you have a ps3 look in the xmb (dashboard), there is an option "boot other OS" which is what boots your linux distro. You can of course go the other way and stream videos off a network but its hardly the best option, well for me anyway, i like my media centre portable and having to take the ps3 and computer to a mates house to watch some movies or to a party is not feasible.

wait for XBMC to be ported? not sure that's going to happen. MythTV is in Ubuntu anyway.
alot of features are locked out of the PC virtualisation (Install Other OS), only VESA graphics are emulated. it's alot like vmware except PPC.

I said it was (implied technically) risky - never said it was illegal. I guess I am not a hacker - prefer to use the devices as I purchased them.

I read on xbox-scene that they are porting xbmc to linux, they were still looking for coder's to make this possible, this was a couple of months ago now tho so i would imagine some headway has already been made into this? XBMC is such a useful program it would be a shame to see it die with the original xbox

OK - looks like it's sanctioned by Sony in that they provide an ability to boot an alternate OS. Just not sure why you would do it, apart from being able play divx natively.

Not a matter of if but will be, the DVB-T service will be mpeg4 for all video streams. As the PS3 supports mpeg4 BlueRay discs then one would assume this has been sorted.

Early ones. Some of the later ones are using mpeg-4.

That's what I use my PC for. The thought of having to teach the kids and wife to dual boot etc. so they can play they BR movies or play games makes this a very unattractive option, for me anyway
